The Ngoc Trao revolutionary base historical site has become a significant location for educating future generations about patriotic and revolutionary traditions.
On September 19, 1941, at Treo Cave, a location within the Ngoc Trao base, the leadership of the Ngoc Trao War Zone, on behalf of the Provincial Party Committee, decided to establish the first armed guerrilla unit of the Ngoc Trao War Zone, consisting of 21 outstanding fighters – the precursor to the Thanh Hoa armed forces later on. The red flag with a yellow star appeared for the first time at Treo Cave. This was one of the concentrated guerrilla units established after the 8th Central Committee Conference of the Party. The reputation of the revolutionary base area and its guerrilla unit had a wide-ranging influence on several districts of Ha Trung, Vinh Loc, Cam Thuy, and Hoang Hoa. People in many localities in the province secretly donated food and medicine to supply the war zone. Many localities inside and outside the province recruited enthusiastic young people to find their way to the Ngoc Trao War Zone.
In late September and early October 1941, the revolutionary movement in the country and province faced many difficulties and challenges. The guerrilla forces encountered numerous obstacles; the enemy began to detect the armed activities of the resistance zone and launched raids and arrests, inflicting heavy losses on the guerrilla units. Although brief, the activities of the Ngoc Trao resistance zone left an indelible impression of a revolutionary army, comprised of outstanding individuals from the people, wholeheartedly courageous in their pursuit of national liberation.
The Ngoc Trao revolutionary base, with the first guerrilla unit of Thanh Hoa province, was born as an inevitable result of the revolutionary movement aimed at implementing the Party's general policy to prepare for a general uprising to seize power for the people. On August 13, 1945, the National Uprising Committee issued a military order for the people and soldiers nationwide to rise up and seize independence. On August 17, 1945, the Thach Thanh District Uprising Committee was established, headed by Comrade Nguyen Tri Dao. The Thanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee sent additional cadres to directly lead the uprising. On the night of August 18 and the early morning of August 19, 1945, the order from the Thach Thanh District Uprising Committee was transmitted throughout the district. Drums and gongs sounded continuously from one district to another, from one village to another. People, armed with sticks and spears, marched vigorously under red and yellow flags, determined to seize power. The self-defense platoons and guerrillas quickly surrounded the district headquarters, putting pressure on the district chief of Thach Thanh to hand over the official seal. Within hours, the uprising to seize power in the district capital was victorious, and thousands of people from all directions flocked to Kim Tan district capital to hold a rally celebrating the victory of the uprising.
In the autumn of August 2025, we returned to the revolutionary homeland of Ngoc Trao commune and felt the profound changes. In the heart of the Muong ethnic veteran Quach Van Thien, there is always pride in being born, raised, and witnessing the ups and downs and transformations of this revolutionary homeland. He was deeply moved and proud as he led us on a tour of the traditional house and the monument to the Ngoc Trao guerrilla war zone. The new rural roads, the modern schools, the sugarcane hills, and the lush green guava and pomelo orchards... are all tangible evidence of this transformation and prosperity.
According to Le Xuan Binh, Secretary of the Ngoc Trao Commune Party Committee, Ngoc Trao commune was reorganized from four communes: Ngoc Trao, Thanh An, Thanh Long, and Thanh Tam, formerly belonging to Thach Thanh district. Immediately after its establishment, the Ngoc Trao Commune Party Committee focused on leading and directing the consolidation of its organizational structure and personnel, and began operating effectively to best serve the people and meet the development requirements of the new phase. With a tradition of unity, the consensus of the people, and the timely leadership and guidance of the Provincial Party Committee, Provincial People's Council, and Provincial People's Committee, as well as the assistance of provincial departments, agencies, and organizations, Ngoc Trao will overcome all difficulties and obstacles, successfully achieving the goals and tasks set forth in the Resolution of the First Ngoc Trao Commune Party Congress, term 2025-2030, contributing to the province and the country's development and prosperity.
