Speaking to reporters regarding the European Commission's (EC) orientation session on EU-China relations, Chinese Ministry of Commerce spokesperson He Yadong affirmed that Beijing maintains clear channels of communication with the EU.
Emphasizing that China and the EU are important economic and trade partners based on equality and mutual benefit, China expects the EU to abide by the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO), support free trade and fair competition, and resolutely oppose protectionism and unilateralism.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce expressed hope that the EU would cooperate to realize the consensuses reached between the leaders of both sides, resolving disagreements through dialogue and consultation to promote the stable and healthy development of economic and trade relations.
Nevertheless, Beijing also issued a stern warning that if the EU reacts unilaterally by imposing new trade tools or discriminatory restrictive measures, China will respond resolutely and take all effective measures to protect its legitimate interests.

Earlier, on May 28, EU Commissioner for Industrial Strategy Stéphane Séjourné stated that European industries such as chemicals, metals, and clean technology are facing the risk of unfair competition from China. The EU is expected to systematically increase the application of import quotas and tariffs.
Shortly afterward, the Chinese Foreign Ministry rejected the EU leader's remarks, calling them a biased assessment, and affirmed that it would closely monitor the EU's actions and implement necessary measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests.
