The two authors Luu Phan and Dinh Hiep affirmed in the preface that: "This is absolutely not a book about the history of journalism of a period, although we have compiled it in the order of historical flow, because journalism cannot be separated from current events.

In each period, the press has a different mission, a different face. The presence and progress of this period cannot be without the faces of previous periods.

21 stories told in Saigon Newspaper Stories

With 21 stories conveyed in 315 pages, Saigon Newspaper Stories is presented in many forms, from storytelling to interviews, creating horizontal and vertical slices of Saigon's bustling newspaper village.

At the beginning, the story of a Saigon without a single day of newspaper closure outlined the long journey of Saigon's journalism, from Gia Dinh newspaper, considered the first Vietnamese newspaper written in the national language, launched on April 15, 1865, and focused on Saigon's journalism after 1975.

Almost all Saigon newspapers are mentioned in the book with separate perspectives.

In story 2, Is there any way for newspapers to become independent?, Tuoi Tre newspaper is mentioned a lot as an example of a newspaper that pioneered a new and successful way of doing journalism, creating a strong brand in the journalism industry.

In addition to talking about mainstream newspapers, the book mentions the type of informal journalism that flourished when print newspapers began to decline from 2015.

The move of information to the cyberspace is an opportunity for new players to enter the media journalism game. In this new journey, many problems arise due to the authenticity of news sites.

"The time we wrote this book was also when there were many concerns that journalism was at a crossroads, not knowing where to go or how to go in the face of the overwhelming influence of technology, media, and artificial intelligence.

This concern exists all over the world and is discussed in many books by authors, researchers, and journalists around the world.

But the context of each place is different, so the concerns are also different. Vietnamese press has its own "very Vietnamese" concerns. We boldly state these concerns here so that each journalist can reflect on them, in order to find a way out for themselves and for the organizations they serve," the two authors affirmed.

Author Luu Phan has been working in journalism since 1996. He has worked at Saigon Economic Times, Saigon Marketing, Today's Rural Newspaper, and Dan Viet electronic newspaper. He has held the positions of reporter, editorial secretary, chief representative, and deputy editor-in-chief.

Author Dinh Hiep has worked for the newspapers The Thao Ngay Nay, Thanh Nien, Saigon Tiep Thi, and Saigon Economic Times. He has published Tran Naked Vietnamese Football , Anh Vien: From Zoro to Hero , and Tram Nam Nam Tennis .
