The U.S. Central Command said its forces intercepted multiple Iranian ballistic missiles and drones and conducted "self-defense strikes" on Qeshm Island.
The incident began after a U.S. fighter jet fired a Hellfire missile at an Iranian-linked oil tanker near the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday night, damaging the ship's engine room. Washington said the M/T Lexie, flying the Botswana flag, was heading toward Kharg Island, violating a unilateral blockade imposed by the U.S.
In response, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had targeted a ship believed to be linked to the US, named Panaya, with naval missiles.
Subsequently, U.S. forces apparently conducted an attack on an IRGC telecommunications tower, which CENTCOM later referred to as "self-defense attacks on an Iranian military ground control post on Qeshm Island."
Subsequently, the IRGC escalated the situation with ballistic missile attacks on a "US air and helicopter base in a country in the region," as well as the "command center of the 5th Fleet" in Bahrain.
The U.S. Department of Defense said Iran launched several ballistic missiles toward countries in the region, but confirmed that none hit their targets. Two missiles fired at Kuwait either crashed or broke apart in flight, while three missiles launched at Bahrain were intercepted by U.S. and Bahraini air defenses, according to the command.
The Kuwaiti military confirmed it was responding to the attacks with missiles and drones, with air raid sirens sounding at least twice last night. Bahrain's Interior Ministry also urged residents to "remain calm and go to the nearest safe place" amid warnings of airstrikes.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned that any security breaches in the Strait of Hormuz would come at a "severe" price for the U.S. military. Meanwhile, the Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that its forces "remain vigilant and ready to defend against any unprovoked Iranian aggression throughout the ongoing ceasefire."
