
Police said the suspect, a male, had made bomb threats and barricaded himself inside the building with several members of the community, but did not specify the exact number of hostages being held. Two hostages were released while negotiations with the suspect continued. Police confirmed that everyone inside the bank was safe.
Earlier, Bakersfield Police received a call reporting a bomb threat at the Chase Bank on 17th Street and Chester, along with a hostage situation. Several buildings in downtown Bakersfield, including the town hall and local police headquarters, were placed on lockdown.
Forces such as SWAT (special weapons and tactical teams), bomb disposal units, crisis negotiation teams, and drone teams were present at the scene to ensure the safety of the local community and handle the situation inside the bank. Residents were advised to stay away from the area where the incident occurred.
