The tense hostage situation at a bank in downtown Bakersfield, which lasted for hours, ended in the early hours of Wednesday (June 3).
According to information from the Bakersfield Police Department, all hostages were safely rescued, while the suspect died at the scene after a shootout that involved FBI agents.
The events began around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, when authorities received a report of a bomb threat at the Chase Bank building, located at the intersection of Chester Avenue and 17th Street.
An unidentified man entered the bank and barricaded himself inside along with an unknown number of people.
Local police and crisis negotiation experts quickly sealed off the scene and established contact with the suspect by phone.
After hours of tense negotiations, the first two hostages were released, one in the afternoon and the other shortly after 9 p.m. that same day. Throughout this process, authorities were unable to determine whether there was a real bomb inside the building.
Due to the seriousness of the incident, the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) joined forces to provide assistance, along with numerous additional resources deployed from across California. Many buildings surrounding the bank were also ordered to evacuate urgently for safety.
The standoff officially ended at approximately 4:20 a.m. on Wednesday. Bakersfield Police confirmed the suspect was killed after being shot by FBI agents.
All remaining hostages were found to be physically unharmed and immediately received medical care and assessment at the scene.
Currently, the investigation is actively underway with a large security presence in the area. Local police have issued a traffic lockdown order between Truxtun Avenue and 18th Street, as well as between H Street and K Street.
People and vehicles are advised to stay away from this area due to traffic disruptions expected to last until this afternoon.
