Nottingham Forest consider replacing Nuno Espirito Santo. |
Express revealed that Nottingham Forest owners are ready to sack the Portuguese coach, after the team was held to a 2-2 draw by Leicester City in round 36 of the Premier League. The disappointing performance above has left Forest at a disadvantage in the race for a ticket to next season's Champions League.
Immediately after the match against Leicester at the City Ground ended, Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis rushed onto the pitch to confront coach Nuno Espirito Santo. The Greek billionaire had harsh words for the team's head coach right in front of the home crowd.
Coach Espirito Santo later explained that billionaire Marinakis' anger stemmed from the fact that striker Taiwo Awoniyi was not substituted. Awoniyi came on late and needed medical attention after colliding with the post in the 87th minute.
Medical staff assessed the striker as fit to continue, so Nuno kept him on the pitch and replaced Jota Silva with Elliot Anderson. However, Awoniyi was unable to continue, causing Forest to struggle when they needed a goal.
“The incident happened because of the situation with Awoniyi. It was a misunderstanding, a problem in communication. I apologize, I cannot say more. It all comes down to emotions, it should not be a big deal,” coach Espirito Santo revealed about the argument with billionaire Marinakis.
The Portuguese coach did not criticize the Forest owners too much but admitted that similar incidents could happen in the future. “It has happened and it will happen again,” said Espirito Santo.
Former Manchester United legend Gary Neville has hit out at Marinakis and suggested manager Espirito Santo should leave Nottingham Forest following the club's owner's disgraceful actions.
“This is disgraceful behaviour from the Forest owners,” Neville wrote on his personal page. “Nuno should leave and negotiate a termination of his contract tonight! Forest fans, players and manager should not have to put up with this.”
