Hawaii's Kilauea volcano erupted violently this week, according to the United States Geological Survey. Kilauea spewed lava as high as 500 feet from its crater. The eruption ended around 8 p.m. local time on September 2. Photo: YouTube/TikTok. This eruption of the Kilauea volcano lasted 13 hours. This is the 32nd lava eruption since December 2024, when the volcano began erupting. Photo: TikTok.
Lava from the eruption was contained in the top of the crater in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a vast protected and uninhabited area on the Big Island of Hawaii. Photo: Getty. However, the USGS warned that high concentrations of volcanic gases are expected to remain in the atmosphere and "could have far-reaching downwind effects." Photo: Xinhua. Kilauea’s recent volcanic eruption released an estimated 55,000 tons of sulfur dioxide, a toxic, pungent gas that forms as volcanic ash after it erupts. It can cause respiratory and other health problems when it is present in high concentrations in the atmosphere. Photo: GE Ulrich, USGS.
