The Thieu Giang interchange, the seventh interchange on the North-South expressway passing through Thanh Hoa province, is entering the road paving phase and is scheduled for completion and commissioning around April 30th.
Thieu Giang interchange is the 7th interchange on the Mai Son - National Highway 45 expressway route passing through Thanh Hoa province.
In late March 2023, observations at the construction site showed many groups of mechanics and bridge builders working diligently. At the interchange with four branches entering and exiting the expressway, the first layer of asphalt had been laid by the construction unit, and many locations had already had the second layer laid. At this interchange, there is an overpass crossing the expressway, and workers from Phuong Thanh Transportation Construction Investment Joint Stock Company are welding the walls and preparing to pour the bridge railings.

Holding a measuring tape to check the width of the retaining wall in preparation for concrete pouring, worker Pham Van Gioi (55 years old, residing in Yen Dinh district, Thanh Hoa province) shared: "Since the start of construction of this overpass, we have encountered many difficulties because the bridge has to have girders run across the highway. If we are not careful, it will greatly affect the traffic passing under the bridge. Besides having protective netting, when working above, we have to be very careful not to let any materials fall, even tiny stones, onto the highway."
Worker Luong Van Que (45 years old, from Hoang Hoa district) said: "We start work at 6 am and finish around 11 am, then from 1:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Because there is no electricity in this area, we can't work at night, so we have to take advantage of working an extra two hours during the day. There are only about 70 meters left to weld the walls before pouring the concrete for the bridge's railing."
According to the Thieu Hoa District Investment and Construction Project Management Board, the project's output has reached 84% to date.
Not far away, at the exit ramp of the highway interchange, Mr. Nguyen Duc Thao, the site manager of Enterprise 11 under the Central Vietnam Corporation, was directing the concentration of machinery to prepare for the second layer of asphalt paving.
"Since the beginning of the year, the rainy weather has affected the road paving. Taking advantage of sunny days, we have to mobilize more manpower and machinery to work. On our construction site, we have 4 engineers and about 20 workers. We only have 14 days left to finish paving the road surface and then move on to traffic safety measures to ensure it's ready for traffic on April 30th," Mr. Thao said.
According to the plan, the Thieu Giang interchange will be completed and put into use by April 30th.
Speaking with Giao Thong Newspaper, Mr. Ngo Khac Dao, an official from the Investment and Construction Project Management Board of Thieu Hoa District, said: The output of Sub-project 2 (the project connecting National Highway 1 with National Highway 45, with the People's Committee of Thieu Hoa District, Thanh Hoa Province as the investor) has reached 84% of the planned target. Currently, construction is underway on the two ends of the expressway overpass, guardrails, expansion joints, and asphalt paving. All work must be completed within 15 days to allow for the next stages such as road marking, lighting, and traffic safety systems, so that the project can be put into use by April 30th.
Reportedly, the project connecting National Highway 1 with National Highway 45 has a length of 14.6km with a total investment of 1,417 billion VND and is divided into 3 sub-projects.
Specifically, Sub-project 1 (the bridge over the Ma River and the approach roads from Km 5+250 to Km 7+250) has a total investment of 655 billion VND from the provincial budget, with the Thanh Hoa Provincial Transport Project Management Board as the investor. Sub-project 2 is managed by the Thieu Hoa District People's Committee.
Sub-project 3, the section of road in Hoang Hoa district (Km0 - Km 5+250), is 5.25km long with a total investment of 307 billion VND, and is managed by the People's Committee of Hoang Hoa district.
The eastern section of the North-South Expressway, passing through Thanh Hoa province, is over 98km long and is divided into three component projects: Mai Son - National Highway 45; National Highway 45 - Nghi Son; and Nghi Son - Dien Chau.
Along the entire expressway route through Thanh Hoa province, seven interchanges are planned, including: Gia Mieu interchange (Km 295+800); Ha Linh interchange (Km 306+000); Thieu Giang interchange (Km 315+380); Dong Xuan interchange (Km 327+142); Dong Thang interchange (Km 335+400); Van Thien interchange (Km 351+320) and Nghi Son interchange (Km 379+500).
The Thieu Quang interchange is a component of Sub-project 2 - the project connecting National Highway 1 with National Highway 45, with the People's Committee of Thieu Hoa District (Thanh Hoa Province) as the investor. The Thieu Giang interchange intersects with the Mai Son - National Highway 45 expressway section at Km 315+380.
