At Nvidia's annual GTC event in Taipei, China, Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang introduced Nvidia's RTX Spark superchip, which combines the capabilities of a central processing unit (CPU) and a graphics processing unit (GPU), designed to power a new generation of Windows laptops and desktops in what the company calls "AI PCs." These devices are expected to be released this fall.
According to Nvidia, the goal of the new chip line is to “reinvent the personal computer” for content creation and gaming. Huang stated that future devices will be supported by AI assistants capable of understanding users, communicating via voice, analyzing images, reading documents, assisting with research, and performing many other complex tasks.
Computers using RTX Spark chips will be capable of running powerful AI models and handling large workloads. Nvidia claims these devices can run AI agents directly on the machine instead of relying entirely on cloud computing.
According to Lian Jye Su, chief analyst at technology research firm Omdia, Nvidia's move comes amid rapidly increasing demand for personal AI assistants. He believes this will provide consumers with more choices and boost competition in the market.
Nvidia is currently the world's most valuable company by market capitalization, surpassing Apple, Alphabet, and Microsoft. Its new line of superchips for PCs is expected to put further competitive pressure on chip manufacturers like Intel and AMD. Following the announcement, Nvidia shares rose nearly 4% in early US trading, while Intel and AMD shares both fell more than 3%.
