On June 22, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hung, Head of the ENT Department, Le Van Thinh Hospital (Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City) said that the hospital had just performed an endoscopy to remove nearly 20 wriggling maggots from the right ear of a 53-year-old female patient.
Accordingly, on the afternoon of June 21, while working, the female patient felt pain in her right ear as if ants were crawling in, so she went to Le Van Thinh Hospital for examination. The patient was prescribed an ear endoscopy.
Maggot nest in female patient's ear
When inserting the endoscope into the ear, the doctor was surprised to see a nest of wriggling maggots. The patient was undergoing endoscopy in a sitting position, so he was moved to a lying position. The doctor used anesthetic to numb the patient's ear canal, also to numb the maggots and keep them still, while using hydrogen peroxide to suck the maggots out and clean the ear canal. The doctor counted nearly 20 maggots.
According to Dr. Hung, the female patient's ear was congested, although there was no pus yet, there were signs of infection. The patient was prescribed discharge but had to return for a check-up, in case the larvae in the ear had not been completely removed.
"The patient had no previous symptoms. The maggot nest in the patient's ear may have had a mother insect fly in and lay a nest. Up until now, the hospital has only seen patients with ants and cockroaches crawling into their ears. A case with so many maggots is unprecedented," said Dr. Hung.
Doctor Hung recommends that if you have a strange feeling in your ear, you should go to an ENT specialist for an endoscopy to check for abnormalities. If there are insects or maggots, remove them completely. Avoid letting these animals grow in your ear, causing inflammation and infection.
