Quang Ngai's OCOP program accelerates its entry into the modern distribution chain.

In addition to increasing the number of OCOP products, Quang Ngai also aims to upgrade product quality, expand e-commerce, and develop value chains associated with tourism and culture.

From rural markets to large-scale distribution systems.

Over the years, Quang Ngai province's One Commune One Product (OCOP) program has helped elevate local specialties and create momentum for rural economic development towards modernization and sustainability. Products that were once only found in local markets are now available in supermarkets and chain stores across the country thanks to the OCOP program.

The Son Bua Agricultural, Forestry and Trade Service Cooperative (Son Tay Thuong commune, Quang Ngai province) has 12 products, of which 7 have achieved OCOP certification. Notably, products such as guava bud tea, dried bamboo shoots, and dried banana blossoms have secured stable sales contracts, helping highland agricultural products find outlets and gradually access large distribution systems.

According to Ms. Le Thi Anh, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Son Bua Cooperative, when products are recognized as OCOP products, opportunities to connect with the market open up significantly. “Currently, the cooperative's distinctive products have connected with supermarkets and distribution chains in many provinces. Thanks to the attention and support of relevant departments and agencies, the products have reached further and created a stable market for farmers in Son Tay Thuong commune as well as neighboring localities,” Ms. Anh shared.

Not only Son Bua, but many mountainous localities in Quang Ngai are gradually shifting from small-scale production to market-oriented agriculture . People are no longer just farming and raising livestock according to traditional practices, but are beginning to pay attention to quality, packaging, design, and consumer demand.

In reality, when agricultural production is organized in a commercial manner, the value generated is much higher than with traditional methods. This also forms the foundation for people to gradually increase their income and develop sustainable livelihoods right in their hometowns.

These changes are becoming part of the OCOP development picture that Quang Ngai is aiming for in the new phase. According to the plan for implementing the OCOP Program for the period 2026-2030, with a vision to 2035, recently issued by the Quang Ngai Provincial People's Committee, the province not only aims to increase the number of OCOP products but also to build sustainable value chains, linked to consumer markets and improving the lives of rural people.

Currently, the province has 619 OCOP products with valid certification, including 2 products achieving 5 stars, 57 products achieving 4 stars, and 560 products achieving 3 stars; with 310 participating entities. The goal by 2030 is for Quang Ngai to strive to have approximately 300 new OCOP products achieving 3 stars or higher, including at least 7 potential products achieving national 5-star OCOP standards, 50 products achieving 4 stars, and the remainder being 3-star products. The province also aims to upgrade about 50% of existing OCOP products to 4 stars or higher.

According to Mr. Do Tam Hien, Vice Chairman of the Quang Ngai Provincial People's Committee, the new phase of the OCOP Program focuses not only on developing distinctive products but also on building value chains based on the advantages of raw materials, local knowledge, and local culture. “The province encourages the development of products in an organic, circular economy, environmentally friendly, and traceable direction. This will be the basis for enhancing the value of local products, expanding markets, and increasing income for the people,” Mr. Hien stated.

Promoting digital transformation and expanding markets for OCOP products.

The fact that local products have reached a wider market thanks to the OCOP program shows that when products are connected to the market, the value of agricultural products lies not only in the raw materials but also in the brand, the way production is organized, and the ability to reach consumers. Therefore, in the period 2026-2030, Quang Ngai will focus on improving the quality of OCOP entities. The province strives to have at least 50% of OCOP entities being cooperatives and small and medium-sized enterprises; and about 70% of entities establishing stable raw material areas linked to production chains.

In particular, 20-30% of OCOP (One Commune One Product) businesses will participate in modern sales channels such as supermarkets, convenience stores, and e-commerce platforms. This is considered an important solution to help local products expand their market reach and enhance their competitiveness.

Over the past period, the Quang Ngai Provincial Investment, Trade and Tourism Promotion Center has actively played a bridging role, organizing many activities to connect supply and demand for OCOP products and local agricultural products. Mr. Le Van Tai, Deputy Director of the Center, said that the unit has proactively connected with businesses and distributors to bring the local specialty products into large domestic and international distribution systems.

"In addition to supporting product promotion and sales, the center also works alongside businesses, cooperatives, and household businesses in accessing digital platforms, expanding online sales channels, and aiming for export in the future," Mr. Tai said.

This direction also aligns with the digital transformation strategy that Quang Ngai is promoting through the OCOP program. According to the plan, many activities such as digitizing product records, traceability, online sales, and livestreaming product promotion will be strongly implemented.

Alongside market development, Quang Ngai is also linking the OCOP program with cultural preservation and rural tourism development. Products will have their "storytelling" developed based on historical, cultural, and indigenous knowledge elements to increase value and attract tourists.

For coastal localities, the province prioritizes the development of products such as processed seafood, traditional fish sauce, seaweed, dried seafood, and experiential tourism services linked to the lives of fishermen. In addition, the province encourages the formation of community-based tourism destinations and rural tourism destinations that meet OCOP standards of 3 stars or higher; and the establishment of centers for introducing and selling OCOP products in tourist areas, attractions, and accommodation establishments.

According to the plan for 2035, Quang Ngai strives to have at least 400 new OCOP products achieving 3 stars or higher, including at least 15 potential products that meet the national 5-star standard; while also expanding the percentage of entities participating in e-commerce and modern distribution channels to approximately 40%.

The People's Committee of Quang Ngai province expects the OCOP program to continue to be an important driving force for promoting rural economic development, increasing people's income, preserving local cultural values, and contributing to building new rural areas in a modern and sustainable direction.
