On January 27, a spokesperson for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed that the agency will send agents to assist with security operations at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy next month.
According to ICE's statement, units of the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) division will coordinate with the Diplomatic Security Service of the U.S. Department of State and host country Italy to review and mitigate risks from transnational criminal organizations.
The agency emphasized that all security operations remain under the control of the Italian authorities and affirmed that it will not carry out any forced immigration operations abroad.
ICE's plan to send agents to the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympics (February 6-22) has sparked heated debate in Italy, particularly following the outrage over the deaths of two civilians in an immigration raid by the force in Minneapolis, USA.
In response to public outcry, Italian officials stated that ICE agents were only assisting in protecting the US delegation, which was expected to include Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, attending the opening ceremony in Milan on February 6th.
Attilio Fontana, the governor of Lombardy, the host region for many of the events, also affirmed that the role of US agents would be limited to ensuring the safety of high-ranking officials.
The public reaction in Italy emerged against the backdrop of President Donald Trump deploying thousands of ICE agents in numerous US cities to conduct operations targeting undocumented immigrants.
This deployment has faced widespread opposition in the US, particularly after the recent shooting deaths of two citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti (both 37 years old), in Minneapolis.
