However, he also warned of the possibility of further military action by the U.S. if negotiations break down. Speaking to reporters, Trump said Tehran had accepted a commitment not to develop nuclear weapons. However, he said Washington also wanted to ensure that Iran would not be able to purchase or access such weapons in any way.
"Currently, the agreement is this: Iran will not develop or acquire nuclear weapons. That's a very big difference. We are gradually getting what we want, even though their negotiators are very tough," Trump said.
The American leader said he was not in a hurry to push for a deal, emphasizing that rushing could diminish the quality of the negotiating outcome. "This process takes time. I'm not in a hurry, because if you rush, you won't get a good deal," he said.
According to Trump, a diplomatic solution remains the preferred option because a successful agreement could allow the Strait of Hormuz to reopen immediately, helping to lower fuel prices and minimize casualties.
However, he warned that if Iran did not meet the conditions set by the U.S., Washington could choose other measures. "If they don't meet the terms, we will resolve the issue in a different way," he said.
Trump also asserted that U.S. military operations had severely damaged Iran's naval and air capabilities, and accused the media of underestimating Washington's success in the region.
However, he stated that he did not want to completely destroy Iran's remaining military forces because that could prolong the country's reconstruction process for many years. The US president also left open the possibility of resuming military operations if negotiations fail or if the final outcome does not meet Washington's interests. He argued that although Iran possesses an effective negotiating team, the US still holds the upper hand in the talks.
Regarding domestic politics , Trump asserted that he was not concerned about the impact of the upcoming midterm elections. According to him, the risk of war would be low if the administration focused on doing the right things instead of pursuing decisions to please voters.
