According to AFP on May 30, Jill Biden's remarks were made during the promotion of her memoir "View from the East Wing," scheduled for release on June 2.
In her book and recent interviews, the former US first lady has for the first time shared details about the debate that is considered a turning point that led to the collapse of Biden's re-election campaign.
In an excerpt from the "CBS News Sunday Morning" program released this week, Jill Biden said that she was terrified while watching her husband's debate with his then-opponent, Donald Trump.
"When I saw him, I thought, 'Oh my God, did he have a stroke?' It scared me to death," she said.
Jill Biden also revealed that after the debate, she wondered if Biden had inadvertently taken sleeping pills or cough syrup containing codeine to induce drowsiness before going on stage.
These comments quickly became the target of Trump's attacks. On the social media platform Truth Social on May 29, the American leader claimed that Jill Biden admitted not understanding what was happening with her husband during that debate.
Trump also sarcastically remarked that if Jill Biden truly believed her husband had suffered a stroke or had a serious health problem, she should have rushed onto the stage to support him.
"She said she thought he had a stroke and other bad things, but didn't rush onto the stage to help her struggling husband—something any good wife would have done," Trump wrote.
The leader also asserted that his superior performance in the recent debate was the reason his opponent "completely collapsed" and "froze."
The presidential debate between the two candidates, scheduled for June 2024, sparked widespread concern about Biden's age and health, at the time he was 81 years old. Throughout the program, he stumbled over his words, gave incoherent answers, and had several controversial moments on stage.
Although Jill Biden publicly encouraged her husband in front of supporters immediately after the debate, her new memoir reveals a much harsher personal assessment.
Specifically, when Biden asked if he had ruined the debate, she bluntly replied, "Yes, you ruined it."
Just weeks later, Biden withdrew from the White House race, ceding his nomination to Vice President Kamala Harris. However, Harris ultimately lost to Trump in the 2024 election.
