Reportedly, o3-mini is OpenAI's first free-to-use reasoning model. The model is designed to provide higher accuracy than conventional large-scale language models. It uses a "thinking chain" system before generating answers and self-corrects errors. This makes it an ideal choice for even the most challenging questions, especially in mathematics.
o3-mini can compete with leading models like o1 and o1-mini at a cost of just $1.10 per million tokens – half the price of o1-mini.
However, compared to DeepSeek's model, the cost of o3-mini is still twice as high – reports reveal that DeepSeek's R1 model only costs $0.60 per million tokens.
The launch of o3-mini came as a surprise to the tech community, possibly due to OpenAI's decision to accelerate the release process to accommodate the growth of DeepSeek.
Unlike DeepSeek, o3-mini is not open source, and free users do not have unlimited access. To use o3-mini, users need to press the "reason" button before submitting a question to ChatGPT. This option is now available on the ChatGPT website.
