In its latest announcement, OpenAI unveiled its next-generation AI model, GPT-4.1, and also launched two smaller versions, GPT-4.1 mini and GPT-4.1 nano, notable for significant improvements in areas such as programming, instruction compliance, and extended contextual processing.
According to the developer ChatGPT, this new series of models completely surpasses GPT-4o – once considered OpenAI's most advanced model – in every aspect, although they are currently only available through the company's API.
Thanks to enhanced contextual understanding capabilities, GPT-4.1 models can handle up to 1 million "tokens"—a technical term referring to the units of data that AI can receive and process. Notably, the knowledge base integrated into these models is updated to June 2024.
The programming performance of GPT-4.1 has been shown to increase by 21% compared to GPT-40 and surpass GPT-4.5 by 27%. Simultaneously, the ability to follow instructions and understand long contexts has improved significantly, making GPT-4.1 models more ideal for supporting AI agents.
On the social media platform X, CEO Sam Altman stated: “The evaluation results for the new models are very high. However, OpenAI wants to focus on real -world usability.”
OpenAI asserts that the operating costs of GPT-4.1 models are significantly lower than those of GPT-4.5. Therefore, the company will stop providing the GPT-4.5 preview currently integrated into the API from July 2025, as GPT-4.1 offers equivalent or superior performance.
Earlier in February 2025, OpenAI released a GPT-4.5 preview for research purposes to a select group of users and developers, and announced plans to expand access in subsequent phases.
