OpenAI launches new Codex tools for office work.

OpenAI has released a suite of six plugins targeting specific jobs: data analytics, creative production, sales, product design, equity investing, and investment banking.

On June 2nd, artificial intelligence (AI) technology company OpenAI released a new set of features for the Codex, aiming to expand the tool's use in the workplace.

Along with new tools, OpenAI has released an internal report on how the Codex is used for brain-intensive office work, showing that its use extends far beyond the software engineering field.

According to OpenAI, Codex now has over 5 million weekly active users, a more than sixfold increase since the launch of its desktop application in February 2026. While developers remain the largest user group, knowledge workers now account for approximately 20% of users and are growing more than three times faster.

To attract these additional users, OpenAI has released a suite of six plugins targeting specific tasks: data analytics, creative production, sales, product design, equity investing, and investment banking.

Available within the Codex application, each new tool incorporates functions, instructions, and context to enable the Codex to simulate a specific task.

In the field of AI, plugins (extensions) are supplementary software programs that "connect" AI to the outside world . They act as the eyes and hands of AI, enabling it to read real-time data, perform calculations, browse the web, or perform tasks within other applications.

Like any AI tool, plugins become more effective as users customize them, but they are designed to work effectively from the start.

These new tools follow a similar effort for agent plugins from Anthropic, which launched its Enterprise Agents program in February 2026 (a more specialized suite of agents geared towards the financial sector was launched in May 2026.)

With its traditional focus on consumers, OpenAI has been slower to attract enterprise customers, only introducing plugin support for Codex in March 2026. Along with the plugins, OpenAI has introduced the new Sites feature, which allows Codex to export its work output as a hosted interactive website, rather than just a local file.

As part of that system, OpenAI is collaborating with Wix, Base44, Replit, Lovable, Figma, and Emergent – although the company plans to develop a larger partner ecosystem to support the service.

The new Annotation feature also allows users to specify a particular section of a document or file within the Codex, enabling more contextually specific commands and operations.

These new enterprise features were launched just three weeks after OpenAI launched a new venture for enterprise customers, called the OpenAI Deployment Company. This venture includes more than $4 billion in funding from global investment firms, with the goal of more deeply integrating OpenAI's tools into businesses.

Denise Dresser, Chief Revenue Officer of OpenAI, stated that AI is increasingly capable of performing more critical tasks within organizations and businesses. According to Dresser, the current challenge is helping businesses integrate these systems into their existing infrastructure and operational workflows.
