Park Hang-seo to Thai League 2 - Not a step backward.

(NLĐO) - From his position as a renowned coach, Park Hang-seo could have easily chosen a safer and more prestigious role.

But he accepted the offer to manage a recently relegated club in Thailand. Behind that seemingly "downward spiral" decision, there was probably a much greater ambition: to conquer the most challenging environment in Southeast Asia and complete his coaching legacy.

Do not choose safe

After leaving the Vietnamese national team in early 2023, Park Hang-seo did not disappear from football. He worked as an advisor, opened a youth academy, participated in football development activities, and notably held the position of Vice President of the Korean Football Association in charge of the national team. This is a prestigious position that not many Asian coaches achieve after leaving their coaching roles.

Coach Park Hang-seo has never liked choosing the safe option.

Therefore, his acceptance of the offer to coach Kanchanaburi in Thai League 2 came as a surprise to many. A coach who once led Vietnam to the final qualifying round of the 2022 World Cup, won the AFF Cup, secured a silver medal at the U23 Asian Championship, and a bronze medal at the Asian Games… is now in charge of a team in the Thai second division.

At first glance, this might seem like a step backward. But a closer look reveals that this decision clearly reflects Park Hang-seo's professional character: he has never liked choosing the safe option.

If all he needed was fame, Park already had it. If stability was required, his role at the Korean Football Association would have been ideal for a 68-year-old coach. But he still chose to return to the coaching bench, where pressure and risks are ever-present.

This shows that he doesn't want to end his career with the roles of an official. He still wants to be truly challenged.

No South Korean coach has ever succeeded in Thailand. Park's most notable statement wasn't about money or long-term projects, but rather: "This is a path that no South Korean coach has truly succeeded on." That statement almost entirely explains his decision.

Over the past 10 years, South Korean coaches have had a huge impact in Southeast Asia. Park Hang-seo achieved great success with Vietnam. Shin Tae-yong elevated Indonesia. Kim Sang-sik is making a new mark in Vietnam.

But Thailand remains a special place. Thai football has a longer history of development than the rest of Southeast Asia. Thai players are technically gifted, play more freely, and are less suited to the military-style discipline that is the hallmark of South Korean football.

In Thailand, media pressure is also immense. Clubs constantly change coaches if performance doesn't meet expectations. Even Thai League 2 is fiercely competitive because the promotion race is tied to finances and image.

Mr. Park understood that perfectly well, but he still proactively stepped in. This wasn't the choice of someone seeking peace and security, but rather the mindset of a coach who still harbored a desire to conquer.

Kanchanaburi buys "DNA Park"

It's worth noting that Kanchanaburi doesn't see Park as a stopgap solution. The club has very high ambitions: promotion within a year, becoming a powerhouse of Thai football within five years, competing with Buriram United, and aiming for the AFC Champions League Elite.

Park Hang-seo still possesses the ambition of a great coach.

It's a long-term plan, and therefore what they need from Park is not just tactics, but also the winning culture he built in Vietnam. Park's greatest success in Vietnam doesn't lie in the number of titles. He changed the team's spirit, their belief in victory, their organization, their ability to handle pressure, and their collective unity. That is Park Hang-seo's greatest value.

Kanchanaburi clearly believes that this model can help them build a long-term foundation. The fact that the club has established a Korean team with Lee Jung-soo and fitness coach Roh Yeong-su shows that they are giving Park a great deal of authority to build a system according to his philosophy.

However, this may be the most challenging job of Park Hang-seo's career. With the Vietnamese national team, he has succeeded in his role as an inspirational figure. Shorter tournaments have allowed him to maximize his tactical organization and team spirit building abilities.

But club football is completely different. The coach has to manage players every day, rotate the squad, handle foreign players, maintain form throughout the season, and constantly deal with pressure to get results. That's not the environment where Coach Park had so much success before.

Moreover, he's no longer young. Returning to the daily training routine at the age of 68 is certainly a major challenge in terms of physical fitness and energy. But it's precisely because it's difficult that it appeals to Park Hang-seo.

If successful in Thailand, Park will prove that he is not only the right coach for the Vietnamese national team during a specific period. He will demonstrate his ability to build a club in the most fiercely competitive environment in Southeast Asia.

Many people look at Thai League 2 and think that Park Hang-seo is declining. But in football, a coach's caliber sometimes isn't determined by the league's name, but by the difficulty of the challenges he dares to take on.

Park had already achieved enough fame to retire safely. But he chose to embark on a new journey from where many South Korean coaches had failed.

He may not succeed in Kanchanaburi. But the mere fact that he dared to take on that challenge shows that Park Hang-seo still possesses the ambition of a great coach.

Who knows, perhaps the team that was recently relegated in Thailand will become the most special final chapter in the career of the man who once changed the history of Vietnamese football.
