Strive for over 95% of tested vegetable samples to meet safety standards

With the plan to develop safe vegetable production areas, focusing on the urban agricultural development program in the area for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City aims to strive for over 95% of vegetable samples produced in the city to be inspected and tested to meet safety standards by 2025.

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee aims to develop safe, concentrated vegetable production areas, ensuring traceability, linked to processing and consumption markets to improve productivity, quality, food safety and production efficiency; contribute to the development of the City's agricultural sector towards modern, sustainable urban agriculture; proactively respond to climate change.

Ho Chi Minh City aims to strive for over 95% of vegetable samples produced in the city to be inspected and tested to meet safety standards by 2025.

Accordingly, by 2025, the vegetable cultivation area of the City will be 3,000 hectares (planting area of 15,280 hectares), concentrated in Cu Chi, Binh Chanh and Hoc Mon districts; the estimated output will reach 446 thousand tons, of which the vegetable output for processing will be 14-18 thousand tons (accounting for about 3-4% of the total vegetable output). Every year, 3-4 new vegetable varieties will be transferred suitable for the conditions of urban agricultural development in the City, providing the market with 400-500 tons of various vegetable seeds, meeting the needs of 560,000-700,000 hectares of cultivation. The proportion of safe, concentrated vegetables with traceability will reach 15-20% of the total vegetable cultivation area of the City; the area of high-tech cultivation will reach 540-600 hectares (accounting for 18-20% of the total vegetable production area); The organic vegetable production area is about 10-15 hectares; Support the construction and development of 2-4 vegetable value chains consumed in the City; Over 95% of vegetable samples produced in the City are inspected and tested to meet safety standards.

In particular, the City sets the target of average production value obtained per hectare of vegetable land reaching an average of 700-750 million VND/year.

The leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee also set a target that by 2030, the area of safe, concentrated vegetables with traceability will reach 30-40% of the total vegetable growing area of the City; the area of high-tech cultivation will reach 1,000-1,250 hectares (accounting for 40-50% of the total vegetable production area); the area of organic vegetable production will reach about 15-20 hectares... And the average production value obtained on 1 hectare of vegetable growing land will reach an average of 800-850 million VND/year, the output value of high-tech vegetables will account for 60-70% of the total value of vegetables.

The City plans to support the construction and development of 4-6 vegetable value chains for consumption in the City and strives for 100% of vegetable samples produced in the City to be inspected and tested to meet safety standards.

To achieve the set goals, Mr. Vo Van Hoan, Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, requested relevant units to promote regional cooperation in building raw material and preliminary processing areas associated with processing and consumption; Strengthen cooperation between domestic and foreign institutes, schools and research centers in research and transfer of scientific advances in varieties, machinery and equipment for high-tech agricultural production; Strengthen cooperation with countries and international organizations in collecting and exchanging vegetable genetic resources; science and technology in the field of seed production, high-tech vegetable production, preliminary processing and vegetable processing lines.

“This is the City's plan to implement Decision No. 4765/QD-BNN-TT dated November 9, 2023 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on approving the Project on developing safe and concentrated vegetable production areas, ensuring traceability associated with processing and consumption markets by 2030,” said Mr. Hoan.
