FRUIT PRICES DECREASE SHARPLY
Recently, the prices of many main fruits in Dong Thap province have dropped sharply, causing farmers to suffer losses. And currently there are still no signs of improvement.
Thai jackfruit prices remain low. |
Durian is one of the province's main fruits. However, since the end of 2024, the price of this fruit has been continuously low. Mr. Huynh Thanh Nha, a durian trader in Hoi Cu commune, Dong Thap province, said that currently, Ri 6 durian bought at the garden costs from 25,000 - 30,000 VND/kg, Monthong durian (Thai) costs from 50,000 - 58,000 VND/kg (depending on the ratio of beauty and ugliness).
Mr. Nha added: “Recently, durian prices have remained low, with little fluctuation. The supply of Ri 6 durian is currently low, while the Thai variety is quite abundant because it is in season. Currently, our country's durian is facing great competition from countries in the region.”
Mr. Nguyen Van Gia Bao, Executive Director of Huynh Nuong Company Limited (Ngu Hiep Commune, Dong Thap Province) said that in recent days, the situation of durian export has been favorable again. Durian entering the Chinese market still has to be tested for Cadmium normally.
However, the proportion of returned goods is small. Talking about the reason why durian exports have been favorable again, but the price is still low, Mr. Nguyen Van Gia Bao added: "Due to the large amount of durian in the country, the price of durian remains at the current level.
On the other hand, because our country is in the fruit season, and Thailand is also harvesting heavily, the price of durian is unlikely to increase. Currently, grade A Thai durian is priced at 75,000 VND/kg at the farm, and about 60,000 VND/kg at the garden. From the perspective of businesses, the current price of durian is very stable; because if the gardeners grow durian out of season, the investment cost is low, not as high as when growing in the off-season.
Coconut prices cool down Meanwhile, in Cho Gao commune (Dong Thap province), the price of Malaysian coconuts is falling quite sharply. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phu, a coconut buyer in Cho Gao commune, said: "Currently, Malaysian coconuts are being bought at the garden at a price ranging from 55,000 - 60,000 VND/dozen, down about half compared to last month. Malaysian coconut exports are decreasing the fastest. For example, while export goods decrease by VND15,000/dozen, market goods decrease by about VND5,000/dozen. This season, coconut output is very high, about double that of the dry season. The reason for the decrease in coconut prices is that in the rainy season, output is high and the export price of coconuts decreases sharply. At this time, although the price of coconuts has decreased sharply, it is still better than previous years. |
Besides durian prices, jackfruit prices have increased slightly in recent days, but are still at a very low level. Mr. Le Van Truong, owner of Dang Truong jackfruit warehouse in My Loi commune, Dong Thap province, said that the current price of Thai jackfruit in the area fluctuates from 2,000 - 4,000 VND/kg (depending on the type). Red-fleshed jackfruit in particular is currently priced from 3,000 - 10,000 VND/kg. Although the harvested jackfruit output is not much, the price is still low. "The export price of Thai jackfruit, businesses buy it for only 3,000 VND/kg.
We do not understand why the price of jackfruit is so cheap. At this price, jackfruit growers are losing money, many gardeners have cut down their jackfruit gardens. There are no jackfruits to buy from the warehouses" - Mr. Truong added.
Along with durian and jackfruit, dragon fruit is also one of the province's main fruits. However, the price of this fruit has fluctuated continuously and is currently at a low level. The family of Ms. Tran Thi My Linh (Dong Son commune, Dong Thap province) grows 3 hectares of red-fleshed dragon fruit.
Three days ago, her family harvested 2 tons of dragon fruit and sold them in bulk for 5,000 VND/kg. Linh shared: “The price of dragon fruit is low, so selling it is not profitable. In the past, the price of dragon fruit has fluctuated erratically, the price has been low all the time, so it is very difficult, mainly taking the labor as profit.”
Livestock and poultry prices rise
In contrast to fruit prices, livestock and poultry prices in the province are at a high level. According to records, after a long period of "hitting rock bottom", in recent days, chicken egg prices in the province have increased again. Mr. Le Van Hoa, Director of Nam Huong Poultry Breeding Company Limited, said that the company has about 700,000 egg-laying chickens. For about 3 weeks now, chicken egg prices have increased again.
Egg prices have risen again. |
Specifically, eggs at the farm are currently priced at around VND19,000 - 20,000/dozen. At this price, farms make very little profit or break even. For the company, thanks to building a retail system, they can sell at a higher price. "When the price of chicken eggs dropped to VND13,000 - 14,000/dozen, farmers suffered heavy losses. The price of chicken eggs has increased again because our country can export informally, along with increased domestic consumption demand," Mr. Hoa added.
Mr. Nguyen Myxso VinaSEC, Deputy Director of Hoang Gia Huy Livestock Trading Company Limited (Luong Hoa Lac Commune, Dong Thap Province) is raising about 35,000 black chickens. In addition, the company is also associated with 50 closed chicken farms from input to output with a scale of about 300,000 chickens. The company is committed to purchasing all output for the associated households at market prices. Although the consumption market is slow, the company is still committed to purchasing all eggs for the associated farms.
According to Mr. VinaSEC, after the Lunar New Year, the price of black chicken eggs dropped to 1,100 - 1,300 VND/dozen, causing heavy losses for breeders. The production cost of black chicken eggs is currently around 1,700 VND/dozen.
“Black chicken eggs are fluctuating between 22,500 - 23,000 VND/dozen. The reason for the increase in egg prices is that in the recent period, farmers have suffered losses and have not re-raised their flocks or released their old chickens to the market. On the other hand, as we are preparing for the moon cake production season, the demand for eggs has increased. In addition, eggs are being exported strongly to the Cambodian market, leading to an increase in prices,” Mr. VinaSEC added.
Along with egg prices, in recent days, the prices of poultry meat in the province have also increased again. Accordingly, after a period of decline, the price of chicken meat in the province has increased to over 70,000 VND/kg, about 15,000 VND/kg higher than last month. With this price, farmers have made a profit. Similarly, in recent days, the price of duck meat has also increased quite sharply. Currently, the price of duck meat at the barn purchased by traders ranges from 45,000 - 50,000 VND/kg, about 10,000 VND/kg higher than last month.
In addition to poultry products, although the price of pork has decreased slightly, it is still quite high, helping farmers make a good profit. Mr. Duong Tan Si (Tan Thoi commune, Dong Thap province) said that although the price of live pigs in the area has decreased slightly, it is still at 6.95 million VND/quintal.
At this price, on average, he earns a profit of about 2.2 - 2.5 million VND/quintal for 1 pig sold. Mr. Si added: “My family has just sold 49 pigs for meat at 6.95 million VND/quintal. Currently, the farm has more than 70 pigs ready to be sold. At this price, farmers can make a profit, only worrying about the epidemic situation.”
