The new policy will alleviate financial pressure as more and more students struggle with living expenses.
Higher Education Minister Philippe Baptiste said the government would allocate an additional 120 million euros by 2027 to support the program. He called it “a small revolution” in student welfare policy, and pledged to monitor the process to avoid staff overcrowding or a decline in meal quality.
Previously, this discounted price was only available to students from disadvantaged backgrounds or those receiving financial aid. Other students had to pay around 3.30 euros for a meal including appetizer, main course, and dessert. Following numerous petitions from student organizations, the French government decided to extend the policy to all students in the higher education system.
Alexandre Ioannides, an 18-year-old student in Paris, says he usually eats at the cafeteria about 20 times a month.
"Previously, I spent around 60 euros, now it's only 20 euros. The money saved will be used for entertainment or other living expenses," Alexandre said.
According to a survey by a student union in January 2026, approximately 48% of students in France have had to go without food for financial reasons, with 23% experiencing this situation multiple times a month.
