On May 26th, the Tay Ho Commune Police in Da Nang City announced that they had handed over two mortar shells to the Commune Military Command for proper handling according to established procedures.
Earlier, at approximately 1:45 PM on May 25th, the Tay Ho Commune Police received a report from the Chau Mai Dam construction team (located in Tay Loc village, Tay Ho commune) about the discovery of objects suspected to be explosive devices during the construction and excavation of the dam's bed.
Upon receiving the report, the Tay Ho Commune Police quickly arrived at the scene to implement measures to protect security and order, and cordon off the dangerous area. At the same time, the unit immediately notified the Tay Ho Commune Military Command to coordinate the inspection, verification, and handling of the situation according to their authority.
Upon on-site inspection, authorities noted two unexploded ordnance that had rusted due to being buried underground for many years. According to initial assessments by experts, these are mortar shells left over from the war. Specifically, one is a 105mm mortar shell weighing approximately 40kg; and the other is an 81mm mortar shell weighing approximately 4kg.
Nearly two months ago, in Hue City, authorities promptly inspected and safely handled two metal objects, identified as artillery shells, that were discovered by residents while working in the fields.
Specifically, in Lai Ha village (Dan Dien commune), a resident discovered a rusty metal object lying on the bank of a ditch in the middle of a field. Shortly after (in Tram Ngang village, Dan Dien commune), another resident also discovered a metal object with similar characteristics. Recognizing the danger, the households proactively reported the incident to the authorities.
Upon receiving the information, the Dan Dien commune police immediately dispatched forces to the scene for initial inspection and verification. They also instructed residents to maintain the status quo, strictly prohibiting any digging or removal of objects, and implemented a warning zone.
Subsequently, the police, in coordination with the commune's Military Command and the Project Management Board for Mine Risk Reduction in Hue City, inspected and handled the objects. Upon inspection, authorities determined that the objects were unexploded artillery shells left over from the war. All the shells were collected, transported, and disposed of safely in accordance with regulations.
