Through this investigation, for the first time, the silver-backed chevrotain, scientific name Tragulus versicolor (critically endangered group) was discovered in Ea So Nature Reserve after nearly 20 years of disappearance in Vietnam and previously only recorded in Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan and Phu Yen (old).

On August 21, Director of the Ea So Nature Reserve Management Board, Dak Lak Province, Le Minh Tien, said that the unit has just coordinated with the Center for Nature Conservation and Development (under the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations) to conduct an investigation and announce the results of the biodiversity survey at the Ea So Nature Reserve and the Krong Nang Watershed Protection Forest Management Board, Dak Lak Province. The results of this investigation are a valuable source of information to help units develop plans to manage and protect biodiversity more effectively in the coming time.

Dr. Nguyen Manh Ha, Director of the Center for Nature Conservation and Development (Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations) said that in more than three months of field surveys conducted by interviewing forest rangers, forest guards at stations, local people, conducting line surveys, camera traps, thermal drones, etc., the investigation team recorded quite surprising results about animals in Ea So Nature Reserve.

According to Dr. Nguyen Manh Ha, Director of the Center for Nature Conservation and Development (Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations), investigation results show that in Ea So Nature Reserve there are currently about 10 extremely rare silver-backed chevrotains.

Specifically, the survey results recorded at Ea So Nature Reserve with at least 30 species of mammals belonging to 15 families and 6 orders, of which the majority group is the primate order with 6 species, the carnivore order with 8 species, the even-toed ungulate order and the rodent order with 7 species. Of which, there are 12 endangered species according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) in 2025, including 3 critically endangered species: Black-shanked douc langur, Javan pangolin, wild buffalo; 4 endangered species: Little slow loris, long-tailed macaque, Truong Son silvered langur, striped civet; 4 endangered species: Red-faced macaque, pig-tailed macaque, muntjac (common muntjac) and gaur; 1 endangered species is black squirrel; 21 species are listed in the Vietnam Red Book 2024, including 5 critically endangered species: Truong Son silvered langur, Java pangolin, striped civet, silver-backed chevrotain, and wild buffalo; 5 endangered species: dwarf slow loris, black-shanked douc langur, deer, gaur, and small flying squirrel; 9 vulnerable species, 2 endangered species...

In particular, this investigation discovered for the first time the silver-backed chevrotain, scientific name Tragulus versicolor (critically endangered group) after nearly 20 years of disappearance and previously only recorded in Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan and Phu Yen (old). Through camera traps, it shows that the silver-backed chevrotain has about 10 individuals in Ea So Nature Reserve.

The silver-backed chevrotain is the smallest ungulate in Vietnam. This discovery not only confirms the importance of the landscape in Ea So Nature Reserve but also demonstrates the value of biodiversity conservation here.

Ea So Nature Reserve has an area of 26,848 hectares and Krong Nang Watershed Protection Forest Management Board has an area of 7,800 hectares. Currently, the two units are carrying out procedures to merge and upgrade to a national park in Dak Lak province.
