Promoting the value of heritage

Việt NamViệt Nam23/07/2024

Promoting heritage values in conjunction with tourism development to offer tourists "green tourism" products has been and continues to be a focus of attention and effective implementation by many localities nationwide. Following this trend, many cultural heritage sites in Thanh Hoa province have become attractive tourist destinations, offering "green" experiences linked to historical and cultural values.

Enhancing heritage values - adding Lam Kinh Historical Site - A "green destination" that attracts tourists.

Nestled amidst nearly 200 hectares of forest, the Lam Kinh National Special Historical Site (Tho Xuan district) is now not only a destination for tourists to journey back in time to a period of great prosperity in the history of feudal dynasties, but also a place where visitors can immerse themselves in the beautiful natural scenery. With its significance and importance in socio-economic development, the Lam Kinh Historical Site has been restored, preserved, exploited, and promoted to become a key cultural tourism destination of the province. This has given the site a majestic and ancient appearance, with a lush, clean, and friendly natural landscape. This is also a crucial factor that helps the Lam Kinh National Special Historical Site increasingly attract a large number of domestic and international tourists.

According to a report by the Lam Kinh Relic Management Board, in the first six months of 2024, the relic site welcomed approximately 180,000 visitors, including 1,150 international visitors. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Toan, Head of the Lam Kinh Relic Management Board, said: “In line with the development orientation of the Lam Kinh Historical Relic Area to become an attractive cultural, historical, and spiritual destination and a key tourist destination of the province, the destination has been planned and organized in a way that conforms to the Convention on the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage, and the legal regulations stipulated in the Law on Cultural Heritage, the Law on Tourism, and other relevant laws. Over the years, the management board has focused on protecting and restoring the special-use forest, ensuring environmental hygiene, and caring for trees in the tomb areas and internal roads, creating an attractive cultural tourism destination for visitors. Along with that, the management board facilitates the promotion of OCOP products and local specialties for visitors to experience; and at the same time, promotes awareness campaigns to encourage visitors to join hands in protecting the green, clean, and beautiful environment of the relic site.”

At the Ho Dynasty Citadel World Heritage Site (Vinh Loc), visiting the ancient citadel is no longer just about sightseeing; there are now many attractive "green spaces" and "green experiences." These include: a cultural space showcasing the agricultural practices of the Tay Do region; an outdoor exhibition of artifacts; a display of citadel building stones as a check-in point at the South Gate; an exhibition of cannon models and reforms of the Ho Dynasty; heritage education programs for students; and more. In addition, many tours connecting the heritage site with nearby historical sites have been introduced and offered to visitors, such as: Ho Dynasty Citadel - Binh Khuong Temple - Pham Ngoc Tung's ancient house - South Gate - citadel building stone exhibition area; exhibition room - Binh Khuong Temple - Linh Giang Pagoda - Giang Pagoda - Nam Giao Altar...

According to Nguyen Ba Linh, Director of the Ho Dynasty Citadel Heritage Conservation Center: “For each heritage tourism destination to truly be a ‘green destination,’ it must first be ‘green’ in every experience. Accordingly, experiential activities at the Ho Dynasty Citadel Heritage site should not only be attractive but also minimize adverse impacts such as noise and dust on the heritage area... In particular, implementing tourism tours connecting with surrounding areas or developing cultural spaces for tourists to visit and experience will be concrete actions to fulfill commitments to UNESCO, while also making the image of the relic more friendly to tourists.”

It can be said that promoting heritage values in conjunction with "green" tourism growth is becoming increasingly popular due to its importance in protecting human resources in the era of integration. With over 1,500 historical sites and scenic spots, and hundreds of unique traditional festivals, Thanh Hoa has many favorable conditions to promote the development of "green tourism," contributing to the diversity and richness of cultural tourism products. This contributes to raising community awareness and creating resources for the sustainable socio-economic development of the locality. This is also an important goal and task in the Cultural Development Strategy to 2030, approved by the Prime Minister in Decision 1909/QD-TTg, dated November 12, 2021.
