Present at the Bac Cua Viet Storm Shelter on the morning of August 25 when storm Kajiki approached the mainland with wind gusts of level 16, the reporter noted that many large and small ships and boats had anchored safely here.
Head of Tan Xuan village, Cua Viet commune, Duong The Lai, said that although the project has not been completed, its effectiveness has been clearly shown. During this storm No. 5 alone, more than 200 boats with capacities ranging from 15CV to over 1,000CV, mainly from Nghe An , Thanh Hoa, Binh Dinh, Hue City, Quang Ngai... have anchored.
“Previously, before this boat dock was built, villagers had to temporarily anchor in small areas, so the number of boats was not large, and there was a potential risk of unsafety during big storms. Now that there is a new anchorage area, not only villagers in the area but also many boats from other provinces feel more secure when coming in to take shelter from storms.”

Not only the locals, the first use of the Bac Cua Viet Storm Shelter has become a safe “support point” for many out-of-province boats to take shelter from the storm. As a merchant from Hue City, Mr. La Khuyn has a boat that regularly goes to offshore areas to directly purchase seafood from fishermen.
When news of storm No. 5 came, he and his crew quickly went to the Bac Cua Viet Storm Shelter to take shelter the day before. “We felt quite secure anchoring at the Bac Cua Viet boat dock. The newly built infrastructure is very secure even though some items are not yet completed,” Mr. Khuyn shared.

Mr. Le Duc, a fisherman from Tan Mai ward, Nghe An province, shared that his fishing boat specializes in fishing in the Truong Sa sea area, each trip usually takes a long time, but this time, we only went for 4 days before encountering a storm. Therefore, when we came to take shelter at the new Bac Cua Viet Storm Shelter, we were quite assured because this area is close to residential areas, so it is convenient for daily activities and preparing goods to continue going to sea after the storm.
According to the report of the Provincial Construction Investment Project Management Board, the Bac Cua Viet Storm Shelter Area was implemented with a total investment of 120 billion VND, with a scale to accommodate about 300 ships with a capacity of up to 1,000CV to anchor and take shelter from storms. The project includes the following items: 2 berths, breakwater, mooring buoy system, dredging of ship locks, internal roads, water supply system and fishing logistics service area. This is also the basis for continuing to invest in completing the Bac Cua Viet fishing port to meet the capacity to serve 60 ships with a capacity of up to 1,000CV/day, the amount of aquatic products passing through the port reaches 7,000 tons/year with a total area of 20.96 hectares.

Vice Chairman of Cua Viet Commune People's Committee Tran Dinh Cam said that as soon as storm No. 5 appeared, the storm shelter combined with Bac Cua Viet fishing port had clearly shown its effectiveness. The number of boats coming to take shelter from winter, not only from Quang Tri fishermen but also from many provinces and cities in the Central region. That affirms the importance of the project for boat safety and local marine economic development.
However, there are still many problems arising in the anchorage area that have been reported by the people and need to be urgently resolved by the competent authorities. For example, the waste treatment is not thorough, causing water pollution; the dredging work is not uniform, making it difficult for some large ships to enter and exit; the project is still in the process of completion, so the service infrastructure is not complete, and some items are still unfinished, causing inconvenience to the people.
