At around 10:30 this morning (July 16), during the process of digging a road to construct the Cam River embankment at the old Binh ferry terminal, in Minh Khai Ward, Hong Bang District ( Hai Phong City), a strange object resembling a bomb, nearly 2 meters long and weighing about 200 kg, was discovered.
A gun The 19th century cannon, from the Nguyen Dynasty, was discovered by construction workers during construction at the old Binh ferry terminal (formerly Ninh Hai port), in Minh Khai Ward, Hong Bang District, Hai Phong City.
Upon receiving the information, Hai Phong authorities were present to inspect and determined that the discovered object was not a bomb but a cannon dating from the 19th century, during the Nguyen Dynasty.
Currently, this gun has been handed over by the local government to the Hai Phong City Museum for management.
According to historical research documents, the old Ninh Hai wharf was located on the bank of the Cam River, Hai Phong City (now the old Binh ferry area).
Before 1887, this land belonged to Hai Duong province. This place was known as one of the ports where trade activities took place between Dang Trong and Dang Ngoai and with merchant ships from other countries. However, by the mid-19th century, this land became unstable due to wars between rebel groups and the court soldiers, such as the uprising of Phan Ba Vanh (1820s) and of Le Duy Phung (1860s).
Along with that, pirates from Southern China made the political and security situation even more unstable.
Faced with that situation, King Tu Duc built a solid defense system with powerful cannon forts in the years 1860 - 1870.
