AI helps Vietnam's manufacturing industry optimize processes and achieve sustainable development.

In the context of the rapidly developing Industry 4.0, artificial intelligence (AI) is not only a technological trend but also a fundamental transformative factor in Vietnam's manufacturing sector, helping to optimize production processes and move towards a circular economy and sustainable development.

Put into effective application

Associate Professor Pham Cong Hiep, Deputy Head of the Research and Innovation Faculty at RMIT University Vietnam, shared: “AI can change the way we design, manufacture, and capture value in the supply chain. This is an important perspective, because not only does it improve productivity, but AI also helps restructure how resources are managed and processed in manufacturing.”

AI helps Vietnam's manufacturing industry optimize processes and achieve sustainable development.

In fact, businesses like Vinatex and Rang Dong have successfully applied AI to their production processes, yielding positive results and demonstrating the power of this technology. Vinatex, for example, has used AI to forecast demand, thereby reducing production time by up to 30%, increasing the accuracy of market demand forecasts, and minimizing material waste.

The results not only help reduce costs but also decrease CO2 emissions and protect the environment. Optimizing production processes through AI also helps Vinatex save resources and energy, contributing to building a sustainable circular economy .

Furthermore, Rang Dong has also successfully applied AI to product development and optimize production processes. According to Rang Dong Light Bulb and Thermos Flask Joint Stock Company, the company has applied AI to predictive maintenance processes, helping to predict the likelihood of machine failure and proactively schedule maintenance. This not only helps reduce maintenance costs but also avoids unforeseen incidents, enhancing the sustainability of production.

In particular, AI also helps Rang Dong recycle and reuse materials more efficiently in production. Computer vision technology and AI robots help accurately identify and classify recyclable materials, maximizing the recovery of valuable resources such as rare earth metals. This not only saves costs but also protects resources, contributing to sustainable development and the application of a circular economy model in the manufacturing industry.

The application of AI in manufacturing by Vietnamese businesses is just the beginning, and they are gradually leveraging, learning, and adapting. Currently, many businesses are still in the testing phase and applying this technology cautiously, mainly to improve some basic production processes. In fact, industrial factories built and located in Vietnam in recent years have standardized the application of AI in production to save costs, manpower, and improve product quality.

Leading companies that have successfully implemented AI include VinFast automobile factory (Hai Phong), Samsung phone factory (Thai Nguyen), Nestlé food factory (Hung Yen), Hoa Phat steel factory ( Hai Duong ), and LG Electronics electronic components factory (Hai Phong)...

Sustainable production trends

According to experts, AI applications not only bring efficiency in terms of productivity but also contribute to environmental protection. AI helps businesses minimize material waste and optimize energy and resource usage. In particular, when AI is integrated into every part of the production process, from design and manufacturing to maintenance, it helps create a closed-loop production process, saving materials, protecting resources, and minimizing negative impacts on the environment.

AI không chỉ mang lại hiệu quả về mặt năng suất mà còn đóng góp vào việc bảo vệ môi trường.

Associate Professor Pham Cong Hiep emphasized: “AI not only helps boost economic growth but also creates powerful transformations in the way sustainable production is organized. By applying AI to optimize supply chains, businesses can minimize waste and promote a circular economy, thereby contributing to the protection of natural resources and the environment.”

Mr. Hiep also noted that integrating AI into production processes is a strategic step, requiring businesses to have appropriate and sustainable transformation plans.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade , the Ministry is currently encouraging businesses in the textile, footwear, processing, and manufacturing industries to use AI for sustainable growth and technological innovation. The Ministry is also coordinating with businesses and research organizations to facilitate the application of AI, making it easier for businesses to apply this technology to their production practices.

However, experts also point out that the deployment of AI in many businesses still faces difficulties, especially in connecting older machinery systems with new technologies. According to Rang Dong, connecting older machinery systems with new technologies such as AI is one of the major challenges. Traditional manufacturing businesses will need a process of technology transfer and personnel training to fully utilize the potential of AI.

Currently, Vietnam ranks 6th in ASEAN in terms of AI readiness, with the goal of reaching the top 4 in ASEAN and top 50 globally by 2030. This demonstrates the strong interest of the Government and businesses in promoting the application of AI in manufacturing.
