AI helps Vietnamese manufacturing industry optimize processes and develop sustainably

In the context of the strong development of Industry 4.0, artificial intelligence (AI) is not only a technological trend but also a fundamental change factor in Vietnam's manufacturing industry, while helping to optimize the production process, towards a circular economy and sustainable development.

Put into effective application

Associate Professor Pham Cong Hiep, Deputy Head of Research and Innovation at RMIT University Vietnam, said: “AI can change the way we design, produce and capture value in the supply chain. This is an important perspective, because not only does it improve productivity, it also helps restructure the way resources are managed and processed in production.”

In fact, businesses such as Vinatex and Rang Dong have successfully applied AI to the production process, bringing positive results and proving the power of this technology. In particular, Vinatex has used AI to forecast demand, thereby reducing production time by up to 30%, increasing accuracy in forecasting market demand and minimizing material waste.

The results not only help reduce costs but also reduce CO2 emissions and protect the environment. Optimizing the production process through AI also helps Vinatex save resources and energy, contributing to the construction of a sustainable circular economy .

In addition, Rang Dong has also been successful in applying AI to develop products and optimize production processes. According to Rang Dong Light Bulb and Vacuum Flask Joint Stock Company, the company has applied AI to predictive maintenance processes, helping to predict the possibility of machine failure, thereby proactively scheduling maintenance. This not only helps reduce maintenance costs but also avoids unexpected incidents, enhancing sustainability in production.

In particular, AI also supports Rang Dong in recycling and reusing materials more efficiently in production. Computer vision technology and AI robots help identify and classify recycled materials accurately, maximizing the recovery of valuable resources such as rare earth metals. This not only saves costs but also protects resources, contributing to sustainable development and applying the circular economic model in the manufacturing industry.

The fact that Vietnamese enterprises have begun to apply AI in production is just the beginning and they are gradually taking advantage, learning and converting. Because currently, many enterprises are still in the testing phase and cautiously applying this technology, mainly to improve some basic production processes. In fact, industrial factories built and located in Vietnam in recent years have standardized the process of applying AI in production to save costs, human resources and improve product quality.

Leading enterprises in successfully deploying AI include VinFast Automobile Factory (Hai Phong), Samsung Phone Factory (Thai Nguyen), Nestlé Food Factory (Hung Yen), Hoa Phat Steel Factory ( Hai Duong ) and LG Electronics Electronic Components Factory (Hai Phong)...

Sustainable production trends

According to experts, AI applications not only bring efficiency in terms of productivity but also contribute to environmental protection. AI helps businesses reduce material waste, optimize the use of energy and resources. In particular, when AI is integrated into each part of the production process from design, production to maintenance, it helps create a closed production process, saving materials, protecting resources and minimizing negative impacts on the environment.

AI không chỉ mang lại hiệu quả về mặt năng suất mà còn đóng góp vào việc bảo vệ môi trường.

Associate Professor Pham Cong Hiep emphasized: “AI not only helps economic growth but also creates strong changes in the way sustainable production is organized. By applying AI to optimize the supply chain, businesses can minimize waste and promote the circular economy, thereby contributing to the protection of natural resources and the environment.”

Mr. Hiep also noted that integrating AI into the production process is a strategic step, requiring businesses to have a suitable and sustainable transformation plan.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade , the Ministry is currently encouraging businesses in the textile, footwear, processing and manufacturing industries to use AI for sustainable growth and technological innovation. The Ministry is also coordinating with businesses and research organizations to facilitate the application of AI, helping businesses easily apply this technology into production practices.

However, experts also pointed out that the implementation of AI in many businesses still faces difficulties, especially in connecting old machinery systems with new technology. According to Rang Dong, connecting old machinery systems with new technology such as AI is one of the major challenges. Traditional manufacturing businesses will need a process of technology transfer and human resource training to fully utilize the potential of AI.

Vietnam currently ranks 6th in ASEAN in terms of AI application readiness, with the goal of reaching the top 4 in ASEAN and the top 50 in the world by 2030. This shows the strong interest of the Government and businesses in promoting AI application in production.
