Sustainable development, enhancing the value of bamboo and rattan.

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - Lang Chanh district has nearly 12,000 hectares of bamboo and rattan, with an annual harvest of over 11 million trees and more than 1,000 tons of related raw materials. In recent years, the government from the district to the grassroots level has focused on directing and proposing specific solutions to sustainably develop bamboo and rattan, increase income from this crop, and help people prosper in their homeland.

In the province's list of key agricultural products, Lang Chánh has two products that have the potential to be developed into flagship products and build product brands: wood and wood products, and bamboo and bamboo products.

To enhance the value of bamboo and rattan forests, the province has also implemented a policy to support the purchase of fertilizers for the first two years of intensive cultivation and restoration of rattan forests at a rate of 2 million VND/ha/year. The district has also approved the Project "Sustainable Forestry Economic Development Linked with Processing and Brand Building of Products in the period 2021-2025".

Along with the provincial and district support policies on planning intensive cultivation areas and restoring bamboo forests, this has significantly contributed to changing people's awareness and knowledge in caring for and exploiting bamboo.

“Previously, people would harvest bamboo and rattan whenever they saw them readily available without paying attention to protection, care, or regeneration. Now, after harvesting, people clean up the undergrowth, remove any bamboo and rattan plants that were infested with pests, fertilize the plants, and intercrop with timber trees and medicinal plants to increase their income,” said Le Van Manh, Deputy Head of the Agriculture and Environment Department of Lang Chanh District.

By the end of 2025, Lang Chanh district is expected to complete intensive cultivation and restoration of approximately 1,000 hectares of bamboo, bringing the total area of intensive cultivation and restoration of bamboo forests from 2022 to 2025 to 2,570 hectares. On a unit area, if bamboo forests are invested in, intensively cultivated, and restored, they will yield an average income of 20-40 million VND/hectare/year.

In addition, the district has implemented sustainable forest management and granted sustainable forest certification (FSC) to over 1,000 hectares of bamboo and rattan forests. Planting and caring for forests according to FSC standards has contributed to eliminating the uncontrolled planting and harvesting that occurred previously. Bamboo and rattan forests certified under FSC standards supply the market with approximately 12,000 tons of high-quality timber annually, increasing income by 20-30% per unit area compared to traditional methods.

Mr. Vi Hong Nghi, residing in Tan Thuy village, Tan Phuc commune, owns 6 hectares of bamboo forest certified under FSC standards. After joining the production chain, he received support in purchasing seedlings and guidance on planting, fertilizing, and caring for the trees.

“Previously, our family planted forests freely, without paying attention to the quality of seedlings or cultivation techniques, so the trees yielded low productivity and the selling price was unstable. After switching to planting forests according to FSC standards, the economic efficiency is much higher, reaching about 30 million VND/hectare/year,” Mr. Nghi shared.

To facilitate the harvesting and transportation of forest products, the district provides 500 million VND per 200 hectares of concentrated forest plantations to build forestry roads. From 2021 to the present, 14 forestry roads have been invested in with a total cost of 6.73 billion VND. Since the construction of these roads, bamboo and rattan can be sold at cost price because people no longer have to pay transportation fees through intermediaries...

Currently, Lang Chanh district has 3 large-capacity factories and 15 small and medium-sized timber processing facilities, providing employment for over 500 workers with an average income of approximately 5 million VND per person per month. In particular, the inauguration and operation of the Bamboo King Vina modified bamboo and wood production plant, with a capacity of 1,500 tons per day, has created stable jobs and income for about 350 workers in the district. The company's products are now available in many provinces and cities nationwide and have already received export orders to the US and European countries for environmentally friendly bamboo and rattan furniture.

Mr. Ha Van Doan, representative of Bamboo King Vina Company, said: "The bamboo used in the factory is completely closed-loop; the scraps will be processed into bio-fertilizer and activated bamboo charcoal. Products meeting standards are expected to be exported to the European market. We also have a separate processing area for FSC-certified bamboo products. In the future, the company will connect with and support cooperatives and households growing bamboo in training, consulting, and sustainable bamboo cultivation, planting, care, harvesting, and business development; and will also plan to regulate and purchase raw materials from the people, ensuring sufficient supply for the factory's production."

“To open up new avenues for the future of bamboo and rattan, the newly established communes will continue to attract investment in deep processing, enhancing the economic value of bamboo and rattan. The communes will encourage processing facilities to form joint ventures and partnerships with organizations, households, individuals, and communities with rattan forests and land for growing rattan to ensure a supply of raw materials; support local businesses in vocational training, technology transfer in production and management (FSC, ISO: 9001, etc.), and access to potential markets to improve production and business efficiency. This will help people create more jobs, increase income, and eventually become wealthy from bamboo and rattan; and bring bamboo and rattan products to the world as a distinctive brand of the district and province,” said Le Van Manh, Deputy Head of the Agriculture and Environment Department of Lang Chanh District.
