(Dan Tri Newspaper) - Patients undergoing spinal surgery often worry about the risk of paralysis and nerve damage. A new, minimally invasive technique of disc removal and intervertebral bone grafting via an oblique lateral approach helps minimize these risks.
On March 18th, at a training course on minimally invasive oblique lateral intervertebral disc removal and bone grafting surgery, Associate Professor Dr. Dinh Ngoc Son, Head of the Spinal Surgery Department at Viet Duc Hospital, stated that this method involves a small incision but solves many complex problems, is minimally invasive, and helps patients recover quickly.

"The hospital stay is very short; patients can stand up after just one day, and after 3-4 days they can be discharged and walk normally after 3-4 weeks," Associate Professor Son emphasized.
Later that afternoon, Associate Professor Son and his colleagues performed a demonstration surgery and presented it to the doctors participating in the training course.
The patient is a woman over 40 years old with spondylolisthesis, suffering from persistent pain for many years. She has undergone medical treatment, traditional medicine, etc., but her condition has not improved.

The patient underwent minimally invasive lateral approach surgery to correct spondylolisthesis.
"This is a safe surgical technique, different from the traditional approach (from the back into the spine), because it's at an angle to the side so it doesn't touch the nerves, only the muscles are retracted, making it safer, reducing complications, reducing the risk of bleeding, and reducing the risk of infection," Associate Professor Son informed.
Since 2022, Viet Duc Hospital has been implementing minimally invasive spinal surgery techniques, helping patients recover quickly and reducing the risk of neurological complications. This is an advanced method, adopted by many countries around the world .
This is a highly specialized surgery requiring experienced and well-trained surgeons. Initial cases often involve assistance from vascular and urological specialists to ensure safety.
Associate Professor Son stated that, with the desire to provide more patients with access to advanced and safe treatment methods, Viet Duc Hospital continuously organizes training courses to transfer techniques to doctors.
During the training, the doctors discussed patient selection criteria, practiced on models, and observed surgical demonstrations from experts.
