Continuing the story from the first film, "Top Gun," released in 1986, this sequel brings viewers back Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (played by Tom Cruise) - a legendary pilot of the U.S. Navy. After more than 30 years of service, Maverick still chooses to stay in the skies rather than pursue career advancement. He is tasked with training a team of elite young pilots for a crucial, life-or-death special operation.
Among the trainees is Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his late best friend Nick “Goose” Bradshaw – a painful memory Maverick has never gotten over. This reunion forces him to confront his past while shouldering the responsibility of leading the new generation on a mission of utmost danger.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the film became a global phenomenon upon its release in 2022, grossing $1.49 billion – the highest of Tom Cruise's career and a box office record for Paramount Pictures. At the 2023 Academy Awards, the film was a success, receiving 6 nominations including Best Picture and winning Best Sound.
Not only does "The Greatest Pilot: Maverick" impress with its realistic and visually stunning aerial combat sequences, but it also continues the spirit of the original film – a story about camaraderie, courage, and inevitable losses.
After 40 years, the "Top Gun" franchise remains one of the icons of Hollywood action films. The film is considered one of the best films of the 1980s and is one of 25 films selected by the U.S. Congress for preservation due to its cultural, historical, and aesthetic value.
