Russian cosmonaut captain Oleg Kononenko has become the first person in the world to spend a total of 1,000 days in space.

At 0:00 on June 5, Moscow time (4:00 the same day Hanoi time), astronaut Kononenko of the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) working on the International Space Station (ISS) became the first person in the world to set a record of working a total of 1,000 days in space.

Mr. Kononenko broke the record of his compatriot Gennady Padalki - a cosmonaut who spent a total of 878 days, 11 hours, 29 minutes and 48 seconds working in space over five missions.

Kononenko is currently on his fifth spacewalk and will celebrate his 60th birthday on the ISS. When his mission ends on September 23, 2024, the Russian cosmonaut will have spent 1,110 days outside Earth.

Cosmonaut Kononenko said his American colleagues were the first to congratulate him on the record.

The Russian cosmonaut assessed that his record of 1,000 days in space was significant for the development of space medicine and preparation for future interplanetary travel, as it “expanded the vision of human capabilities” as well as “the needs and problems of the boundaries of the human body's potential.”

Cosmonaut Kononenko made his first space flight in April 2008 on the Soyuz TMA-12 spacecraft. Upon his safe return to Earth, he was awarded the titles Hero of the Russian Federation and Cosmonaut of the Russian Federation.

Mr. Kononenko has commanded the Russian cosmonaut team since 2016. Interestingly, this astronaut is also a correspondent for the TASS news agency at the ISS.

According to the cooperation agreement between TASS and Roscosmos, Russian cosmonauts flying to the ISS will receive a reporter card from this news agency, and from the ISS, they will carry out information missions about Earth as real reporters./.
