Arakan, one of three rebel armed groups in Myanmar, announced today, November 13, that it had captured several more outposts in the Rathedaung and Minbyam areas of the western Rakhine state.
"We have captured some more outposts. Fighting continues in some other places," said Khine Thu Kha, spokesman for the Arakan Army (AA) rebel force.
A resident in Rathedaung said he heard gunshots early this morning, followed by hours of shelling.
The Myanmar military has blocked access to these areas and increased security at government buildings.
Fighting also broke out in Chin state, bordering India, when rebels attacked two army camps, Reuters reported, citing an Indian official and two sources familiar with the matter.
James Lalrinchhana, a local official, said about 5,000 Myanmar people had crossed the border to seek refuge in the Indian state of Mizoram.
The Myanmar military has not yet commented.
Myanmar's military is facing its biggest challenge since 2021 after three rebel armed groups launched a coordinated attack against Myanmar security forces in late October and took control of several towns and outposts near the Chinese border.
Attacks also occurred in the Sagaing region of central Myanmar, extending to western Shan state.
Richard Horsey, a senior adviser at the Crisis Group, said that if the fighting continues, the Myanmar military will have to deal with new fronts while its forces are stretched. "It will be very difficult for them to concentrate on all fronts," Mr. Horsey said.
Myanmar's border regions are home to more than a dozen ethnic armed groups, some of which have been fighting the Myanmar government for decades.
