Preventing myopia in children

Reader TH has two children in kindergarten and elementary school and asks how to care for their eyes to prevent nearsightedness?

Dr. Duong Thi Anh Tho, Head of the Pediatric Ophthalmology Department, Can Tho City Eye - Dental and Maxillofacial Hospital: Refractive errors include myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. The common symptom of refractive errors is blurred vision. Among these, myopia is often seen early in young children.

To prevent nearsightedness, parents need to guide their children to: increase outdoor activities and limit continuous close-up viewing time. Visual rest is also important: after every 20-30 minutes of close-up viewing, especially when using electronic devices, the eyes need a 2-3 minute rest by looking into the distance (5-6 meters) or closing their eyes to reduce strain.

Distance and posture: Children need to study and play at an appropriate distance. The distance from the eyes to books and learning materials should be about 30-40cm. Sit with a straight back while studying; do not lie down while reading. When watching television, sit at a distance equal to 7 times the width of the television (about 2.5-3m).

Ensure adequate lighting when reading, ideally with light coming from behind and above. Choose paper and books that are not too glossy, and ensure the print is clear to avoid eye strain.

Children need regular eye exams every 6-12 months to detect eye diseases and refractive errors early. Important dates for eye exams include: newborn, 6 months old, 1 year old, 3 years old, 5 years old, and before starting primary school.
