PSG are too strong for the rest in France. |
Daniel Riolo, a veteran writer for RMC, asserts that PSG will sooner or later have to step out of the borders of France to find a worthy playground - that is the Super League.
According to Riolo, the boredom among the fans is the clearest evidence. “PSG fans, many of them, no longer feel the excitement when their team wins at the weekend. Even the defeat against Marseille no longer hurts them as before. That saturation has killed the once-fierce confrontations in Ligue 1,” he analyzed.
In fact, PSG is too strong compared to the rest. Apart from the Champions League, there are few matches in Ligue 1 that make Luis Enrique and his team have to stretch their strength. For Riolo, that is no longer an environment that is enough to challenge and nurture the ambitions of a club that is used to living in the international spotlight.
The French journalist also did not forget to mention the milestone of 2021, when the Super League project was strongly opposed by public opinion. At that time, PSG was one of the few big names to publicly stand with UEFA and Ligue 1. President Nasser Al-Khelaifi even affirmed that the domestic league was the most important foundation.
“It's hypocrisy. I said it then and I say it again: PSG's future is not Ligue 1, it's the Super League,” Riolo stressed.
Not only stopping at the professional perspective, Riolo pointed out a harsh reality: the financial crisis of Ligue 1. He warned: “In two years, Ligue 1 will run out of money. It will only be a tournament of training centers, competing with each other without anyone caring. PSG cannot be stuck in such an environment. They are forced to find a way out with the big European teams.”
Riolo has even insisted he would back PSG if this scenario materialised, as long as the Super League was accompanied by a comprehensive restructuring of European football.
PSG has long been the “giant in the small pond” of Ligue 1. Easy wins, apathy from the audience and the prospect of financial ruin have made the league less attractive. Riolo’s argument may be controversial, but there is no denying: PSG are at a historic crossroads. And with ambitions to reach European level, the Super League may just be a matter of “when”, not “if”.
