Le Quang Liem with Gold Medal at Biel Grandmaster, Switzerland on July 27, 2023.

With an additional 12 Elo from his Biel Grandmaster title, Quang Liem (Elo 2,740) jumped from 21st to 15th place in the world according to FIDE's monthly list. If all players are considered, Quang Liem is currently ranked 16th. However, Teimour Radjabov (2,747) was removed from the FIDE list because he did not play any standard games in the past 12 months. Therefore, Quang Liem rose one place to 15th place, his personal record since his previous highest position was 20.

Quang Liem is 12 Elo points behind Richard Rapport's world No. 10 ranking, and 95 behind Magnus Carlsen, the world No. 1. He will have the chance to improve his Elo at the 2023 Chess World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan. He will play Ivan Ivanisevic (2,530) in the second round, playing black first, at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 2, Hanoi time.

Also at the Chess World Cup, Vietnam has three representatives: Le Tuan Minh (2,559) in the Open group, Vo Thi Kim Phung (2,351) and Nguyen Thi Mai Hung (2,229) in the Women's group. Mai Hung lost to Gulnar Mammadova (2,357) by 0.5-1.5 and was eliminated in the first round. Kim Phung drew with Michalina Rudzinska (2,257) after two games, so had to play a rapid chess tie-break on August 1. Tuan Minh avoided elimination by winning the second game, to tie 1-1 with Vugar Asadli (2,567), entering the tie-break.

Vietnamese-origin player Hoang Thanh Trang (2,402) easily entered the second round with a 2-0 victory over Zineb Dina Abdi (1,858), to meet Divya Deshmukh (2,372). Meanwhile, Nguyen Thai Dai Van (2,637) also defeated Zhang Yuanchen (2,281) 2-0 and entered the second round to meet Aryan Tari (2,629).

The World Cup is the most important individual tournament, taking place every two years, and the top three players will qualify for the 2024 Candidates. This year's tournament takes place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from July 30 to August 24, with 206 players in the men's division and 103 in the women's division. The players compete in a knockout round, including seeds who are exempt from the first round such as Carlsen (2,835), Hikaru Nakamura (2,787), Fabiano Caruana (2,782) and Ian Nepomniachtchi (2,779).
