Vietnam and Brunei established diplomatic relations on February 29, 1992, and upgraded them to a Comprehensive Partnership in March 2019.

The King's visit affirms the determination of both countries to continuously strengthen and deepen friendly relations and cooperation in all fields after upgrading bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Partnership.

Brunei's Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah will hold talks with President Luong Cuong, meet with General Secretary To Lam, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, and participate in other important diplomatic activities.

During the visit, the two sides will exchange views and assess the progress of cooperation in various areas outlined in the Action Program for the Comprehensive Partnership between 2023 and 2027, which was adopted during Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's visit to Brunei (February 2023). In particular, the visit provides an opportunity for both sides to discuss measures to strengthen and deepen cooperation in key and priority areas.

Economic cooperation between the two countries has made significant progress. Two-way trade turnover for the 2023-2025 period exceeded the target of $500 million, with bilateral trade reaching over $670 million in 2024, laying the foundation for both sides to set higher trade targets in the coming period.

Vietnam's exports to Brunei have shown promising growth in recent years, specifically increasing by over 30% in the first 10 months of this year compared to the same period last year.

Cooperation in priority areas such as energy, the Halal industry, and tourism is being promoted. Several Vietnamese businesses in Brunei are expanding their operations, especially in the culinary and handicraft sectors. Both sides are actively exchanging information and establishing cooperation frameworks in areas of mutual interest, particularly the Halal industry and fisheries.

Security and defense cooperation has also yielded many positive results through the implementation of memoranda of understanding on defense cooperation and cooperation in specific areas.

Educational cooperation and people-to-people exchanges play a crucial role in strengthening the friendly and cooperative relationship between the two countries. The Vietnamese community in Brunei acts as an important bridge, promoting economic, social, cultural, and people-to-people exchanges.

The King's visit is expected to open more doors of cooperation for relations between Vietnam and Brunei, further developing bilateral relations in a more substantive and effective direction, contributing to peace, cooperation and development in the region and the world.
