Phu Quoc International Airport is currently one of the important air traffic hubs of the Mekong Delta, contributing to connecting Vietnam with the region and the world . After more than 16 years of operation according to the planning approved since 2008, many development indicators have reached or exceeded the initial forecast, showing remarkable growth in passenger and cargo transportation.
According to Decision No. 648/QD-TTg dated June 7, 2023 of the Prime Minister on the master plan for the national airport system for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, Phu Quoc Airport will be significantly adjusted and expanded. The airport will be upgraded to level 4E according to the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), ensuring service for wide-body aircraft and large passenger traffic.

According to the new plan, Phu Quoc International Airport will have a designed capacity of 10 million passengers/year by 2030 and 18 million passengers/year by 2050. In addition, the plan also includes the construction and expansion of a series of important items such as: passenger terminal, warehouse system, cargo terminal, technical infrastructure and ancillary aviation services.
One of the notable highlights is the expansion of nearly 200 hectares, bringing the total usable area of the port to about 1,050 hectares, creating a land fund for long-term and synchronous development of the entire airport system and auxiliary areas.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Giang Thanh Khoa, Vice Chairman of Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee, affirmed that the announcement of the new planning is an important milestone for Phu Quoc city in particular and Kien Giang province in general, opening a new stage of strategic, modern and sustainable development for the local aviation and tourism sectors.
Mr. Khoa emphasized that this planning not only meets the needs of air transport development but is also an important foundation to promote the socio-economic development, especially the tourism industry of the province. The port expansion will create conditions for Phu Quoc to become an international tourism and marine economic center.
The planning is also in line with the orientation of organizing the APEC 2027 Summit Week in Phu Quoc, an event expected to attract thousands of high-level delegates from around the world, requiring a modern, professional and classy air transport infrastructure system.
Kien Giang provincial leaders pledged to closely coordinate with central ministries, sectors and investors to ensure the implementation of the planning on schedule, quality and efficiency. The provincial government will continue to create favorable conditions for projects related to aviation infrastructure and support to be implemented smoothly and synchronously.
