On January 1st, 2025, Dong Trieu City solemnly held a ceremony to announce Resolution No. 1199/NQ-UBTVQH15 of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly on the establishment of Dong Trieu City and to receive the First-Class Labor Medal. Becoming the fifth city of Quang Ninh province is a significant political event, a source of honor and pride for the Party Committee, government, and people of Dong Trieu. This is also the result of the efforts and determination of the government and people of the Fourth War Zone to develop in all aspects.
After nearly 10 years since its establishment as a town, Dong Trieu has emerged as a bright spot in the socio -economic development of Quang Ninh province. The economy has consistently maintained stable and sustainable growth, with an average growth rate of over 14% during the 2020-2024 period. The economic structure has shifted positively, with the industrial-construction and service-trade sectors accounting for 95.9%; and the agriculture-forestry-fishery sector accounting for 4.1%. Notably, Dong Trieu consistently leads Quang Ninh province, as well as the whole country, in building new rural areas, advanced new rural areas, and model new rural areas. The people's living standards have improved significantly, with average per capita income reaching US$8,803 in 2024, and no households classified as poor according to provincial criteria remaining in the city.
The joy and excitement of the Party Committee, government, and people of Dong Trieu City have spread strongly, serving as a driving force for Quang Ninh to continue striving to establish Quang Yen City in 2025, which will be the 6th city directly under the province.
To realize the goal of transforming Quang Yen into a city, Quang Yen town has recently developed a plan to establish Hiep Hoa and Tien An wards and to create Quang Yen City within Quang Ninh province. Quang Yen town currently has a natural area of 333.70 km2 and a converted population of 210,602 people; it comprises 19 commune-level administrative units, including 11 wards and 8 communes. According to the plan, Quang Yen will become a city by 2025, maintaining the current natural area and population size of Quang Yen town, as a center for industry, port services, and logistics, and achieving Type II urban status before 2030.
In 2025, Quang Yen town will mobilize all resources to develop socio-economic aspects and complete urban and transportation infrastructure. Simultaneously, the town will strongly attract investment capital, especially non-budgetary capital and FDI, thereby promoting rapid and sustainable economic development. Quang Yen aims for the industrial and construction sector to account for 78-80%; services 15-17%; and agriculture, forestry, and fisheries 2-4% of the local economic development structure. Total development investment capital is targeted at over 27,000 billion VND. Total state budget revenue is targeted at 1,828 billion VND.
However, alongside infrastructure investment, attracting investment, and economic development, Quang Yen town continues to assess the remaining and weak criteria in order to complete and supplement urban criteria to become a city.
Quang Yen currently possesses significant potential and advantages, boasting both sea and road access, as well as air connectivity via Van Don and Cat Bi airports (Hai Phong). It serves as the southwestern gateway to the province, situated between the three major cities of Hai Phong, Uong Bi, and Ha Long, and is one of the key trading hubs connecting with the Northern key economic region, contributing to regional and inter-regional economic development. Along with the synchronized development and investment in transportation infrastructure, Quang Yen town is currently planning for the strong development of industrial zones, seaports, and logistics services. The town currently has five industrial zones: Dong Mai, Song Khoai, Nam Tien Phong, Bac Tien Phong, and Bach Dang, along with the Quang Yen Coastal Economic Zone. These zones have attracted numerous businesses, investors, and large corporations, leading to growth for both businesses and the locality.
With the determination to make Quang Yen town the 6th city of Quang Ninh province, from the very first days and months of 2025, the Party Committee, government, people, and business community in the town have strived to effectively implement the goals and plans set for the year. Through this, they are determined to work together with Quang Ninh province to become a centrally-governed city by 2030.
