Real Madrid are very close to reuniting with Jose Mourinho after 13 years. According to Sky Sports , the Spanish giants are willing to pay 3 million euros to release the Portuguese manager from his contract with Benfica.
The move was made on May 18th. As a result, Mourinho was free to negotiate and finalize the formalities for his return to Bernabeu. The two reached a verbal agreement for a two-year contract.
This is a decisive move by President Florentino Perez in his plan to rebuild Real Madrid after a trophyless season. Mourinho was chosen because of his strong personality and ability to control the dressing room.
Previously, Mourinho hinted at the possibility of staying in Portugal. However, the offer from Real Madrid was reportedly too attractive for him to refuse. The "Special One" himself admitted to having discussions between his agent, Jorge Mendes, and Real Madrid's management recently.
If all procedures go according to plan, Real Madrid will announce Mourinho right after the final round of La Liga. This weekend's match against Athletic Club will be a milestone marking the end of the season before the Royal team enters a new era.
Mourinho managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, winning one La Liga title, one Copa del Rey, and one Spanish Super Cup. Despite the controversies surrounding him, he is still considered one of the most charismatic and successful coaches in the club's history.
