The trend of choosing a career via ChatGPT is booming: How well does AI understand you?

The trend of choosing careers through ChatGPT suggests that candidates may find suitable matches based on their interests and abilities. However, experts advise young people not to place too much trust in this or consider it a "guide" for their future careers.

Because career choices should still be based on practical abilities, experience, and self-understanding, rather than relying entirely on artificial intelligence (AI).

Choosing a career through ChatGPT: Fun and informative

AI is no longer simply a technological tool; it seems to have become deeply ingrained in everyday life. Beyond assisting with information searches, AI has become a "consultant" and "problem solver" in matters of love, work, career choices, and even suggesting fashion styles and what to eat to suit one's mood. Many people turn to ChatGPT or Gemini for advice on unclear or unknown issues. Among these, asking AI about suitable careers is becoming a popular trend among young people.

Nguyen Nhat Huy, a 12th-grade student (residing in Hoa Hung Ward, Ho Chi Minh City), said he couldn't ignore the trend of using ChatGPT for career advice, especially since he's also planning his future career. Huy entered his interests, personality, and first choice – Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology – his favorite university and one that's quite close to his home, then asked the AI which major would be most suitable for him.

Huy typed: "My first choice, with a personality that likes to explore and is cheerful, suggest a suitable career (field of study) for me." The result, ChatGPT suggested a range of fields such as: "logistics and supply chain management, aerospace engineering, or industrial management."

But in reality, Huy actually likes Computer Science . "Even though I already have a clear direction for my studies, I still wanted to see if AI could accurately predict the career path I'm interested in. It's fun and gives me more ideas," Huy said.

Also preparing for the high school graduation exam, Nguyen Tran Bao Han, a 12th-grade student (residing in Hoa Hung Ward, Ho Chi Minh City), plans to enroll in the Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, majoring in Japanese language, because she loves the language and Japanese culture. However, Han still "asked" ChatGPT to analyze whether she is suitable for this major as a way to "follow the trend" and for entertainment.

Hân entered: "I love Japanese culture, please suggest the most suitable career for me." The result was that instead of a Japanese language major, she ended up with Japanese translation/interpretation, tour guide… Hân could only laugh.

As a programmer, Mai Thien Vu (26 years old, residing in Vinh Hoi Ward, Ho Chi Minh City) said that ChatGPT has been very helpful in learning new knowledge as well as serving his daily work. AI tools in general have also helped him come up with some solutions in the programming and information processing process.

According to Vu, AI tools have the ability to synthesize data and offer many interesting and insightful suggestions for reference. "I'm also interested in trends that AI suggests for career choices or personal styles like clothing and shopping, however, career choices should still be based on self-understanding and personal direction, because everyone has different passions at different stages of life," Vu shared.

When discussing trends where AI suggests suitable careers or lifestyles, Nguyen Tri Dung (27 years old, residing in Vuon Lai Ward, Ho Chi Minh City) said he also participated in this trend but only considered it as reference information. "Humans should still make their own decisions and take responsibility for their choices instead of depending on AI," Dung said.

It is necessary to know how to filter information.

According to Associate Professor Pham Hong Long, Chairman of the Training Council of the Faculty of Tourism Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), young people today are changing to adapt to the AI era. The convenience of tools like ChatGPT helps users quickly receive answers to questions or seek advice on beauty, travel, shopping, education, career choices, etc. However, he believes that AI should only be considered a supporting tool and should not be trusted absolutely.

"It's crucial to always compare and question information provided by AI to avoid being misled or becoming dependent on the technology. Furthermore, personal preferences and emotions remain paramount. Whether for entertainment or knowledge, users need to be selective about information and compare it with reality instead of blindly trusting AI suggestions. Because AI can provide inaccurate or manipulated data," Mr. Long emphasized.

Regarding the trend of choosing careers based on ChatGPT's suggestions, Mr. Long believes that AI should only be a reference tool. Each person has their own abilities and strengths, so career choices should be based on the compatibility between individual capabilities and the actual needs of the labor market. "When 'supply' (individual abilities) and 'demand' (market needs) meet, that will be the most suitable and sustainable career choice," Mr. Long said.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Lan Huong, former Director of the Institute of Labor and Social Sciences (Ministry of Interior), believes that choosing a field of study and a career should be based on the needs of the labor market and the future prospects of that field. Young people should choose schools and professions that suit their abilities and needs.

"Young people should make choices that suit their individual stages of life, rather than blindly following the crowd without considering their own abilities and future career prospects. Chat GPT's suggestions should only be considered for reference and entertainment, as this is a current trend among young people. AI is useful and provides a lot of knowledge and information, but it is still just a tool; it cannot accurately understand what you want or need," Ms. Huong said.
