On June 1st, the leaders of Phu Trach commune stated that relevant authorities are coordinating to investigate the cause of the mass shrimp deaths that occurred in the pond of Mr. Pham Dinh The (43 years old, residing in Dong Hung village).
According to initial information, on the evening of May 28th, Mr. The discovered an unusual phenomenon in his family's shrimp pond: shrimp were floating densely on the water's surface and dying in large numbers. The water in the pond emitted a strong, foul odor.
Noticing unusual signs and suspecting external interference that led to the incident, Mr. The reported it to the authorities for investigation and clarification.

After receiving the information, the Economic Department and the Phu Trach Commune Police conducted an on-site inspection and collected water samples to determine the cause. The incident has also been reported to the Quang Tri Provincial Police, as per their jurisdiction.
According to Mr. The, he and Mr. Doan Manh Thanh, also residing in the same locality, jointly invested in raising whiteleg shrimp in three ponds. Only one pond experienced a problem. After draining the affected pond, he discovered eight packages of calcium carbide at the bottom. This is very likely the cause of the mass shrimp deaths.
At the time of the shrimp deaths, the shrimp had been raised for about 45 days, were growing well, and were expected to be ready for harvest in about a month. Had no incident occurred, the shrimp production could have generated revenue of approximately 2 billion VND.

According to estimates from the two households, the damage caused by the incident amounts to nearly 1 billion VND. Currently, the cause of the mass shrimp deaths is still being investigated and clarified by the relevant authorities.
