Robben continues to play sports even after retiring. |
His passion for the sport, which was booming in Europe, led him to the CUPRA FIP Tour, where Robben and teammate Werner Lootsma won a dramatic qualifying round for the FIP Bronze Westerbork.
Showing the resilience of a former football star, Robben and Lootsma saved six match points before coming back to win 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 against Ralph Boekema and Mark Weldmate. However, his dream ended prematurely in the round of 32, when he failed to spring a surprise against the top 200 pair of Sten Richters and Thijs Roper, suffering a swift 1-6, 0-6 defeat.
Nevertheless, Robben is still praised by his opponents and the International Federation of Paderborn (FIP) as the best former Paderborn footballer currently playing. For him, this isn't about chasing new glory, but simply about enjoying the game: "I didn't think I could pursue Paderborn too seriously. I started with low expectations, just trying to fight and score as many points as possible."
In football, Robben is famous for his magical left foot, but his career has also been plagued by injuries. In just two seasons with Real Madrid (2007–2009), he suffered nine injuries, scoring 13 goals and providing 14 assists in 65 matches, earning him the nickname "the Crystal Star." Today, on the Padel pitch, that image evokes a feeling of both fragility and brilliance – a Robben still giving his all with the ball, albeit on a different surface.
