What is Robinho like now?

Once a shining star of Brazilian football, Robinho now stands out in a completely different role: prisoner and… reluctant businessman.

After serving more than a year in Tremembé prison (São Paulo) for gang rape in Milan in 2013, the former Real Madrid striker is attracting attention with his audacious plan: to establish a betting company upon his release.

His partner in this business project is none other than his fellow inmate Walter Delgatti – a notorious hacker who was sentenced to over eight years for hacking into Brazil's national justice system. According to local media, Robinho came up with the idea, while Delgatti provided the technological expertise. Although this "unusual" pair didn't share a cell, they frequently met on the sundeck to discuss their plans.

At 41, Robinho no longer harbors many ambitions on the football field. Instead, he aims to be an exemplary prisoner, hoping for a reduced sentence or a transfer to a semi-open detention system.

According to Brazilian law, every 12 hours of labor reduces a convicted person's prison sentence by one day. Robinho didn't miss the opportunity: he completed a 600-hour electronics course, regularly repaired televisions and radios for fellow inmates, tended the vegetable garden, joined a book club, and completed the entire "Labor & Citizenship Education " program.

However, behind that calm exterior lay signs of mental instability. According to his relatives, Robinho was showing signs of depression, especially after the mysterious death of his close friend Rudney Gomes da Silva – an accomplice in the 2013 case – who was found dead in a parking lot in Santos.

During his playing career, Robinho was considered a "prodigy".

Family-oriented, Robinho still receives support. He is frequently visited by his wife and three children, especially his eldest son, Robson Jr., 17, who recently made his debut for the Santos first team – the club associated with his father's early glorious years. However, it was at the very place where his football dream began that Robinho was arrested in 2023, when the Brazilian Supreme Court decided to enforce a nine-year prison sentence previously handed down by an Italian court.

Currently, Robinho is confined to an 8m² cell with a younger inmate who is accused of inciting suicidal behavior. He no longer plays football regularly in prison and lives a relatively secluded life. Nevertheless, his lawyer, Mario Rosso, asserts: “Robinho maintains a stable mental state, has no conflicts in prison, is always busy, and behaves appropriately.”

Robinho and Delgatti's plans to start a new business from behind bars raise many questions about the future of the former Brazilian football legend. With the spotlight fading, will his fame and efforts at rehabilitation be enough for him to start over – this time with a betting company bearing his name?
