Cristian Romero has unexpectedly returned to London. |
Earlier, the Tottenham captain caused controversy by missing a crucial home game to return to his hometown to watch his boyhood club Belgrano play the Championship final against River Plate. This decision angered many Spurs fans as the London team was facing immense pressure in the final matchday.
Romero is currently out for the rest of the season following a knee injury sustained against Sunderland in April. The Argentinian defender has been allowed to return home to continue his recovery and prepare for the 2026 World Cup.
On May 23rd, Romero unexpectedly reappeared in London. The 1998-born player posted a photo on Instagram of himself getting a haircut with his son, suggesting he was likely to be in attendance at the Tottenham vs. Everton match instead of staying in Argentina to watch Belgrano play.
Coach Roberto De Zerbi did not criticize his player but admitted he understood the fans' anger. The Italian coach said Romero had spoken with the medical team before returning to Argentina to recover from his injury.
Meanwhile, Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle reacted strongly to Romero's initial actions. He argued that the captain's departure from the team during a difficult time was "scandalous" and inappropriate for a leader.
