Bamboo dancing is an indispensable form of cultural activity during festivals and traditional New Year of the Thai ethnic group in Son La . This is a beautiful traditional culture, preserved and promoted by the Thai people, creating a joyful, exciting atmosphere, connecting the community.

To dance with bamboo poles, first you need to prepare the necessary props, such as: A pair of main bamboo poles (2 large, long, straight bamboo poles), 5 pairs of small bamboo poles (straight bamboo poles with a smaller diameter than the main bamboo pole and the same size, 3-4m long). Then, place the two main bamboo poles a certain distance apart, place the small bamboo poles on the main bamboo poles and place them parallel to each other to form a bamboo pole array. The distance between the pairs of small bamboo poles is from 15-20cm, ensuring convenience for the person hitting the poles and making it easier for the dancer.

The bamboo dance team is divided into two groups, one group performs the task of tapping the bamboo and the other group dances with the bamboo. The bamboo tapping group will tap to the rhythm, every two times the bamboo is tapped, one time the two bamboos will be tapped together, creating a bustling sound. The bamboo tappers must tap evenly, at first tapping at a moderate speed, then later tapping at a faster speed to increase the difficulty for the dancers. Each pair of boys and girls takes turns entering the bamboo set, holding hands and dancing to the bamboo beat. When dancing, they need to skillfully follow the tapping rhythm, otherwise their legs will be caught by the bamboo.

To make the bamboo dance more special, the girls hold fans or scarves and dance rhythmically. The movements are gentle and graceful, the dance formation sometimes jumps vertically, horizontally, diagonally, forming a circle on the bamboo stage. The music, the bamboo stage, and the footsteps blend together to create an exciting, joyful atmosphere. This is also an opportunity for Thai boys and girls to get to know each other and flirt.

Ms. Vi Thi Nua, Chieng Cang commune, Song Ma district, said: In the past, bamboo dance did not have background music, only the sound of bamboo sticks being knocked along with the dancers singing the typical notes of the bamboo dance, "Son son son do son, son son son do re...". Nowadays, with the development of society, bamboo dance is combined with many types of rich background music, creating a joyful, vibrant atmosphere and attracting everyone to join in bamboo dance. Regardless of age, youth, gender, ethnicity, bamboo dance contributes to bringing people closer together, creating solidarity and attachment in the community.
