On the morning of February 22nd, many fishing boats from the province departed from Hon Ro port to head out to sea to harvest seafood. This first fishing trip of the year 2026 (Year of the Horse) carries the hope for a year of smooth sailing, favorable winds, and holds full of fish.

Hon Ro Port was bustling from early morning. Trucks carrying ice and essential supplies crowded the port to supply fishing boats preparing to set sail. Fisherman Le Van Hien, owner and captain of fishing boat KH 91289 TS in Bac Nha Trang ward, shared: “Unlike fishing boats catching yellowfin and bigeye tuna that stay at sea throughout Tet, gillnet fishing boats that catch skipjack tuna usually only set sail after Tet. After celebrating Tet with our families, we have fully prepared fuel, ice, food, and supplies to go out to sea. I have completed the procedures for the boat to leave the port. The authorities at the port also inspected and sealed the vessel tracking equipment, documents related to registration, inspection, food safety certificates for the fishing boat, and information and certificates of the 9 crew members on board. On time, we will send the boat straight to the fishing grounds.”

Similarly, the eight crew members on the fishing vessel KH 90027 TS owned by Mr. Pham Man in Nam Nha Trang ward are also ready for their first fishing trip of the year. According to Captain Pham Ngoc Linh, the current fishing season for skipjack tuna and striped tuna is underway, so after celebrating the Lunar New Year with their families, all eight crew members were at the port early to prepare for departure. For fishermen, the first fishing trip of the year also holds spiritual significance; a successful trip will bring good fortune for the whole year. Therefore, before setting sail, the fishermen prepare very carefully. Everyone hopes for a year of smooth sailing and a boat returning with a hold full of fish.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ba, Head of the Hon Ro Port Management Board, said: “On the morning of February 22nd, 35 fishing vessels, 15 meters or longer, specializing in gillnet fishing, completed the procedures to leave Hon Ro port for fishing trips lasting approximately 10 to 12 days. Previously, during the Tet holiday fishing trip, 68 vessels fishing for yellowfin and bigeye tuna also headed straight to the fishing grounds; they are expected to return to port in about 7 days. To facilitate fishermen's entry and exit from the port and unloading of fish, Hon Ro port has arranged 24/7 shifts to assist fishermen with the necessary procedures. Logistics services for fishing, such as fresh water, fuel, and ice, have also been arranged to ensure convenient access for fishermen.”

In recent years, offshore fishing activities in the province have faced many challenges due to unpredictable weather patterns, rising fuel prices, and increased production costs. However, thanks to timely support policies from the State, fishermen have been able to confidently stay in their fishing grounds and maintain production. In particular, fishermen in the province have strictly complied with regulations on combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, contributing to the removal of the European Commission's IUU "yellow card" warning.

Mr. Le Dinh Khiem, Head of the Fisheries and Marine Affairs Sub-Department, stated: “To ensure fishermen can confidently venture out to sea and maintain their livelihoods, the sub-department will accompany, support, and create the most favorable conditions for fishermen in their production at sea. In the context of the IUU (Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated) fishing “yellow card” directly impacting the production and lives of fishermen, more than anyone else, each fisherman needs to unite and organize safe and efficient production; strictly comply with the law on marine resource exploitation, absolutely not violate foreign waters, and maintain the operation of vessel tracking devices, record and submit fishing logs as required… In addition, fishermen need to raise their awareness of protecting aquatic resources, combining exploitation with conservation, and aiming for responsible and sustainable fisheries development.”
