In the early hours of October 15th (Vietnam time), Ronaldo scored a brace in the 2-2 draw between Portugal and Hungary. The match was part of the fourth round of Group F in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in the European region.
In the 22nd minute, Ronaldo made a clever run to be in the right place at the right time, receiving a cross from Semedo on the right wing and tapping the ball in to equalize the score at 1-1 for Portugal.
Prior to Ronaldo's goal, Portugal had struggled despite playing at home against a spirited Hungary. The visitors opened the scoring with a goal from Szalai in the 8th minute.
But Ronaldo's impressive performance extinguished all that excitement. After equalizing at 1-1, CR7 scored again to put Portugal ahead 2-1.
This time it was a cross from the left wing, delivered by Nuno Mendes. The PSG defender created a beautiful trajectory, putting the ball right at Ronaldo's feet in a favorable position, and obviously the 40-year-old superstar didn't miss the opportunity.
If Portugal had won this match, they would have officially secured their World Cup qualification with two matches to spare. But then Szoboszlai kept Hungary's hopes alive with a goal in the 90+1 minute, leveling the score at 2-2 for Hungary.

This unfortunate goal conceded means Portugal cannot finish their World Cup qualifying campaign early. After four matches, they currently have 10 points, 5 points ahead of second-placed Hungary, and only need one more win to secure their place in the 2026 World Cup.
As for Ronaldo personally, he set a memorable record – the most goals scored in the history of World Cup qualifiers.
Previously, Ronaldo was tied with Carlos Ruiz (Guatemala) with 39 goals in World Cup qualifying history – three more than Messi. His two recent goals have now propelled him to a record of 41 goals.
Since Messi's Argentina team has already finished their World Cup qualifiers, Ronaldo's record is likely to stand for a long time.
Despite having a far superior record in the qualifying rounds, Ronaldo lags far behind Messi when it comes to the World Cup. At the world's biggest football tournament, CR7 currently has only 8 goals after 5 appearances, while Messi has 13.
