Visiting the flower market is one of the long-standing traditional cultural activities of the Vietnamese people during the Lunar New Year. These days, the spring flower market in Hung Vuong Square, Viet Tri City, is bustling with activity. Besides peach blossoms and kumquats, the market also sells hundreds of types of flowers and ornamental plants. Each type of flower and plant has its own unique beauty, but all convey a message of peace, prosperity, and abundance to every home. Different regions showcase different kinds of flowers, creating a vibrant and colorful atmosphere.
The snake mascot is depicted with a cheerful shape and expression at the entrance gate of the Spring Flower Market.
As in previous years, the Spring Flower Market of the Year of the Snake (2015) displayed a wide variety of flowers and ornamental plants. Traditional plants such as apricot blossoms, peach blossoms, and kumquats still dominated the market. According to peach blossom vendors, this year's favorable weather and the ability of growers to time their planting perfectly for Tet resulted in evenly distributed and beautiful blossoms.
The beautiful, flowering peach trees are carefully transported by the gardeners.
Plum blossoms are also a popular choice of flower during Tet (Vietnamese New Year).
Walking around the flower stalls at the flower market, besides the common flowers, you'll also find roses, azaleas, peonies, chrysanthemums, and more.
Various types of roses add vibrancy to the Spring flower market.
The stalls mainly offer phalaenopsis orchids imported from Da Lat, in a variety of colors such as yellow, orange, reddish-purple, and white. Retail prices range from 200,000 to 400,000 VND per stem, depending on the quantity, color, and rarity of the flowers. Pots of phalaenopsis orchids of all types, colors, and sizes are displayed for customers to browse and choose from.

Customers come to admire and choose the orchid pots they like.
Orchids are also loved by many people for their striking beauty in shape and color.
Not only are orchids captivating with their vibrant and diverse colors, but they also score points for the longevity of their flowers.
In recent years, potted Dien pomelo trees have become quite popular among people because of their large trunks, abundant fruit, and yellow color, which symbolizes wealth and good fortune.
Ornamental pomelo trees laden with fruit are being sold for prices ranging from a few million to tens of millions of dong per pot.
Playing with kumquat trees during Tet (Vietnamese New Year) is a Vietnamese tradition, symbolizing prosperity and success in the new year.
Mr. Luong Van Ha, owner of a kumquat garden in Trung Vuong commune, Viet Tri city, said: "This year, my garden is supplying the market with more than 100 kumquat trees of various types, sizes, and shapes. Kumquat trees in pots, priced from 200,000 VND to 3 million VND, are popular choices. If customers come to the Spring flower market and can't find a tree they like, I will introduce them to my garden so they can choose a suitable tree."
The job of transporting peach and kumquat trees for hire has also become very busy these days.
Besides flowers and fruits, many kinds of ornamental plants and bonsai trees are also sold at the Spring Flower Market.
After strolling around the Spring flower market and choosing a peach blossom tree she liked, Ms. Nguyen Huong Trang from Vinh Tuong town ( Vinh Phuc province) shared: “Every year, I go to the flower market. On the occasion of visiting relatives at the end of the year, my family went to the Spring flower market in Viet Tri city to see and buy flowers. The flower market is very beautiful, with many varieties, including many beautiful bonsai trees such as pomelo, apricot, and kumquat trees.”
With the diverse market of flowers and ornamental plants, people will have more choices to add spring colors to their family's living spaces, ready to welcome a new year with much joy and new successes.
Flowers appear in spring, adorning the land and the hearts of people. Beyond the specific significance of the traditional Lunar New Year, the Tet flower market is also a delightful pastime that reflects the refined character of the Vietnamese people. People go to the flower market not only to choose flowers but also to find moments of peace and tranquility, hoping for a warm and happy spring, and together welcoming a prosperous and healthy new year.
