Spanish Football Federation president loses job over groping player at 2023 Women's World Cup

Leading Spanish newspapers confirmed that Mr. Luis Rubiales will resign as president of the football federation today (August 25). Mr. Rubiales is facing a storm of criticism from the public after his rude behavior towards the Spanish women's team players during the coronation ceremony of the 2023 Women's World Cup championship.

The president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) unexpectedly kissed striker Jennifer Hermoso while handing her a medal. In addition, during the victory celebration, Mr. Rubiales hugged and picked up another player. Members of the Spanish women's team, including the two players mentioned above, did not accept this action.

Hermoso issued a statement through the Spanish Footballers' Association (FUTPRO): "FUTPRO cooperates with the competent authorities to protect my interests and is responsible for dialogue on this issue. We strongly condemn this violation of women's dignity.

From the association, we ask the Spanish football federation to take the necessary action to guarantee the players' rights and apply the right measures."

Rubiales’s response to the incident did little to quell the wave of criticism. According to Marca, the president of the Spanish Football Federation only made a forced public apology after his flight back home.

He insisted that he did not commit any indecent acts with the intention of harassing the female players. However, Hermoso and Ivana Andres, the two players who were physically touched, refused to appear with Mr. Rubiales in the above apology video .

The Spanish Football Federation had to hold an urgent meeting to deal with the crisis. The World Football Federation (FIFA) opened an investigation into Mr. Rubiales's behavior and could impose heavy penalties. The Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sports and many of the country's football teams also called for a boycott and took measures to deal with Mr. Rubiales.
